A warning for everybody trying to scrap weapons for weapon mods

I've been trying to find weapon mods for gatling gun for almost a week. Vendors don't sell those and there are very few to be found around the map.

Occasionally, I did find a few gatling guns and sometimes a text would pop in the top left corner when scrapping that a "new modification has been acquired" or something similar. It never specified what kind of modification that was and when trying to upgrade my own gun, those new mods never showed up.

Today I make an experiment and equip Gunsmith perk rank 5, make a few low level gatling guns and scrap them...and in a few dozen scraps I have the mods I desired.

Point is don't scrap without equipping Gunsmith or you probably just waste your time when trying to get rarer/high tech weapon mods. Couldn't find anyone on the internet having mentioned that the perk has an effect on scrapping for mods? Is this a recent thing?

could have swore i too got one where it didn't show up on one of my limited weapons brought it over and was nothing. i too add remove that perk its big wonder if that is what happened.

i have scraped many with getting them though maybe its if they need skills to build they need the skill to learn? i have never looked into it or tested how i am doing it.

Don't think it has anything to do with it. Gatling gun doesn't have many mods anyways. Its like one mod for each part.

Yep gunsmith has no effect on learning mods.

Gunsmith does not effect any mods you get from scrapping.

It´s more likely the game is bugging out again, or you scrapped smth that was not exactly the weapon you want to mod (like Gamma Laser or Gamma Gun) etc.

Nope. It is pure coincidence form having enough INT to equip Gunsmith 5 perk. The chance to learn is based upon intelligence.

You also have to keep in mind that some of the weapon mods can not be learned by scrapping such as Scorchkiller Receivers and Prime Receivers.

I've had this happen too from scrapping some gatling guns, not sure but maybe it's a bug tied to that gun. A generic message pops up saying "new modification learned" instead of the usual telling you the mod name.
Will try scrapping them with the Gunsmith perk, thanks.

Don't bother, the perk has absolutely nothing at all to do with learning the mods. Every mod has a % chance to be learned when scrapped if its learnable. Some are rarer then others

for my railway rifle upgrades all 13 of them i learnt back to back by crafting a lvl 30 railway rifle equiping a shortscope to it then scrapping.. if u scrap it without mod it dint give me new mods.. i got 13/14 weapon mods for it this way.. 14th one is prime and u only get that from SBQ RNG drop.. i tried to do this method for combat rifle but i ran out fo screws.. for now i just run around with a railway rifle as its the cheapest weapon for maintainence and ammo and packs a lot of punch .. and yes i had gun smith on.. not sure if it affected it.

Again, having a scope on it would have no effect. There is NOTHING that you can do to an item that raises the chance aside from having a higher int.

I understand that but there's clearly a bug with the gatling gun, no other gun displays this generic message then nothing is actually learned. OP seems to have found a fix related to equipping the Gunsmith perk.

No that bug pops up with other weapons too. I've had it happen myself in the past. Whether gunsmith makes the name pop up or not however doesn't make effect the actual learning of the mods.

In that case, maybe you can't get mods if you scrap items found as you play, but it works when you scrap crafted weapons?

Nope, doesnt matter if its found or crafted. It's all RNG, and once you get the common ones you can scrap 20+ weapons before you learn one of the rarer mods or you can learn it on first try.

The perks don't affect the chance of getting mods.

It's just the Intelligence stat that affects it.

Some weapons just have really low chance and sometimes it can be just so unlucky that you don't get any mods for a long time.

Same thing happened to me for the handmade.

Had to craft and scrap close to 20+ of them just to get the Powerful Automatic Receiver mod I wanted and during those 20+, I took off Gunsmith to put on Scrapper so at least from what I experienced, Gunsmith has nothing to do with learning mods because I also got a few other mods which I didn't want.
