One of the blood eagles shot at me with it, but I would loot missile launcher instead from his body.....

I don't know if this is a bug or intended, but it drives me nuts.
Blood eagles will carry and drop gatling plasmas, it just isn't super often. I've unlocked 4/5 plasma gat mods from blood eagle drops over the course of about 2 weeks of regularly clearing blood eagle spots.
my guess this is a bug. Happens quite often with me. I could loot different weapons than the mobs shooting with.
I dont know where mine is come from. But it saved my life countless times. Its the best choice against high level opponents/cryptids IMO. Unfortunately I didnt stumbled on another one. Nor I saw at the vendors.
i too got a plasma from purveyor was using a gatling laser for when i just needed to lay down a lot of fire but the plasma does a lot more dmg though i agree its not very stable and its fire has a wider area though that could be ok with mobs. i'm level 51 and am finding them as stated from the blood eagles. so far have found a barrel mod though still noticeable recoil. i would say its good for close to low medium ranges. both these gatt's are great with ammo efficiency(though the laser ammo may want for armor) though for their class/dmg output.
As I observed its only useful in shotgun-range or SMG-range at best. With the distance growing, the fewer bullet hit the target. Though mine is unmodded. I currently experimenting with other weapons for shooting tough enemies from distance (gauss rifle, The Dragon).
The loot of a humanoid mob does not directly depend on with which weapon he shot you. But, an enemy heavy gunner will always drop a heavy weapon, an enemy ranged mob will always drop a ranged weapon, an enemy melee mob will always drop a melee weapon, and the hand to hand mobs amongst the scorched always have an empty inventory.
