I don't recall if it was an actual check or not but if it was it wasn't too high at the time maybe 4 points.
If I recall, you simply just state you're a ghost. The text is in all caps. I switched between just the honest responses and the ghost one. I even went through the dialogue using the main (first) dialogue. Then I went back and initiated another speech with him and did the ghost dialogue and it unlocked the keys for me. So I got two successful dialogue quests (if that makes sense)
I never even used the 88888 anywhere. I think it allows you to skip all of that
