what is best way to farm ammunition ?

Hit Lucky Strike mine in excavator armour for lead ore should net you with super duper (luck perk) about 1000 lead get the ammo perk from agility most ammo problems solved via that

Raiders faction give you machine producing ammo, you need ally status.

I would say craft your own ammo be the best bet. and ammosmith perk in agility might help

As others have said, the only way to farm it is to craft it - especially if running a heavy weapons build - otherwise, you'll never find any where near enough...

Try running a 50cal or minigun... I virtually never find 50cal ammo, and finding 6-12 5mm rounds is little more than a trigger pull on my minigun...

STEEL
a) scrap guns with scraper perk,
b) pick up tin cans (Camdem park has alot of can traps)
c) there are some IRON veins East of Relay Tower HN B1 12, right side by the power tower, use excavator power armor.
d) there are some IRON veins on the road between Graham Estate and Uninished Mineshaft 2 (south side Ash region), use excavator power armor
e) there are some IRON veins around Horwight Testing site and Striker Row in the ash heap region, use excavator power armor.

You refine iron with acid at a chemistry station into steel

LEAD
a) Lucky strike mine with excavator power armor
b) Loot up paint cans, toy cars, pencils
c) Travel to Grenn Country Lodge, Prison Yard and Tygard water threatment, pick up weights, the give lead.

Excavator Power Armor is basicaly a must have to mine in F76, it gives you a boost to the output of mining. You must be level 25 or above to use it to then go to Garrahan Mining Headquarters and complete the quest to get acess to it. Farm mole miners for suit scrapt that you will turn into black titanium.

ACID
a) Atm the best way is to join the fasnacht parade, pick up all the honey and scrap it
b) Farm Yao Guais or Smellygasters
d) buil your camp at a ACID location and build a ACID farm

CLOTH
a) Farm the event that pops up at Morgantown Airport (Collision Course), it gives pre-war money that you can scrap into cloth

GUNPOWDER
a) Farm supermutants or raiders
b) craft them using acid and cloth.

5.56 is reasonably rare better to make your own
.308 is extremely common in super mutant camps
Fusion cell is common in any Robot Camps
Plasma Core is reasonably rare.

With that said most players in the game sell most ammo for 1 cap each.
Selling Ammo is one of my biggest money makers in my vending machines.
People tend to come around and buy 200 - 500 at a time.

if lead is the problem there are events in ash heap "storm and holt" or something like that. the drillers will give you pleanty of lead ore and soon its the resource you are least in need for ammo crafting. (helps when you have the manager id from the mining company on your char)
if this isnt enove build your camp at lead knote and take workshops with lead knotes for production

Try not to collect lead "ore", it will need acid to turn it into proper lead, so you will need acid as well. (I gave up collecting lead ore long ago).

Try to find lead "scrap" which doesn't need any extra work or materials, lots of things contain lead ie: car batteries.

Or go to gyms and collect the training weights, like in Flatwood, or the fire station, and the launch sites if your high enough level.

Energy Gun Ammo uses only Lead and Steel, those are easy tp fnd.

Hopefully they adress this soon, I found awesome Minigun, too bad I only had 1.5k ammo, so I burned it in couple mission.
