Fallout 76
Is the combat really that bad, or just me?!
Just started playing, only level 6, started towards the airport mission, and got jumped about 20 zombies crossing the bridge!

Swinging and flailing widly to no avail...combat just seems clunky and they lurch at you with super zombie speed!

Does the game really need to throw so many mobs at us low levels?!

there's also something wierd happening with high lvl enemies restoring most of the damaged HP, if you don't use VATS. Every time if i shoot some regular high lvl enemy with a shotgun, it can take 3-6 shots to put them down, but if i use VATS, i oneshot almost everything. And i don't even have any perk cards for a shotgun or VATS.

It is due to server ping.

If you use VATS, the game is pre-calculating whether the shot will hit and what damage it will do.

If you are shooting in real time, the game is doing a little bit of predictive guess work on whether or not your shot is hitting the enemy and how much damage is dealt. So the game doesn't feel sluggish - your client side of the game shows the hit and damage if it thinks that happened - but then the server side may find there was a slight error (enemy moved a little, not all your spread hit) and the enemy health is corrected. This is necessary to make sure the same enemy has the same health left as far as all players are concerned, so if you are fighting with teammates, the mob doesn't have different HP totals for each person.

The problem is more visible with shotguns because they fire a spread, and the closer or farther away you are determines how much of the spread hits (and thus how much damage is received). It isn't a simple "hit" or "no hit" like a lot of the guns. So you will see more recalculation due to server ping than with other weapons.
Welcome to a Bethesda game. Where clunky and awkward is actually a design choice.

Haha yeah that is so true. I broke down and bought this because I'm a sucker for Fallout, and I kid you not every single session I have with FO76 I question Bethesda's game design.

For example, most recently I'm at Fort Atlas(?) working for the BOS and need to cook my foods, there's a stack of chopped wood and even an axe right there beside the cook station, so naturally I go to grab some. NOPE, can't use any, gotta go hunt for wood. And even then you need to go relatively far away to find more than 10 scraps. Sure enough I get back and haalf my meats are spoiled.
FU Bethesda.
