All the content they put out like quests, events and now even expansions is free, all you need is the base game. The game dumps Atoms on you and there are Daily/Weekly tasks to get more once the initial surge has run out and they often give out random atom shop items for free.
I don't sub and I haven't spent a dime on Atoms and I've gathered a ton of Atom Store items just by playing the game.
tl:dr: There are no disadvantages if you have zero interest in using the store or having a subscription.
Subscription allows the player to use the endless box for scrap storing. It's a quality of life change, so it's up to you to decide whether it's something siginificant for you personally.
But from my own experience you won't be needing this at least for dozens of hours with proper inventory management. And maybe even never.
Private server? do they offer any advantages? from the technical point and game content?
There's nothing different between a private server and a public one in terms of gameplay and what content is available, it's all the same.
