What is the current meta of the workshops?
I tried to ask this on Reddit but the post was removed due to a rule breaking? I guess they really don't like free discussion of perceived problems in the game?

Anyway, like most people I don't like that high level PVP specialist players can gank you in the workshops. This effectively makes workshops off limits for low level players unless they have the constitution to accept that hours of work can be undone in a matter of seconds when another player with PVP gear and 100+ levels higher hits two keys on their keyboard.

It's like, to me, an open festering sore in an otherwise beautiful world. I love the concepts of workshops and I ALWAYS share resources from workshops I build up.

Tried the game last month, dusted off a level 40 character. Ran out of ammo and supplies and desperately needed a workshop.. Didn't even find the capture point when someone level 125 flipped it and instantly killed me. It reminded me why I moved on before.

So have they done anything about this?

I even tried a subscription so I could have my own private workshops like Fallout 4.. But NO! They don't save! So you don't even really get a private world, you just get an instance.

Has anything changed about this? Or are workshops still for toxic bullies who like to drown kittens for kicks?

Think the one that gives you alot of acid is the most important. You need alot of it when you melt metals. Its better to craft own ammo instead of holding the ammo factory.

Ammo factory is like a pvp area, no one holds it for the ammo. They just want to fight there.

So regarding the PVP;

When I am on a workshop area - say the workshop is un-owned.

If another player begins to capture the workshop, then I am immediately flagged for PVP correct?

And then I need to run out of the area of the workshop to be out of PVP, or do I stay flagged as PVP when I move out of the workshop area?

Best thing would be to just fast travel out from there. You need to run far away from the area to get untaged.

Thanks. I will work out some kind of evasion tricks for my character before I try to use the workshops. Every time I play I am having a good time and then eventually get killed by someone who mathematically I had no chance of beating - much less surviving more than a few seconds. It totally ruins the fun for me - especially when I have just spent hours keeping my character alive from tougher PVE enemies. Getting dunked on when there is nothing you can do about it is not "fun".
Well with the right perks the crafting is waaay better than any workshops,(ammo crafting + superduper )

Yeah this is true. But when I played during the launch time I liked to fix up the power plants and make cores, and it was also fun to set up the race track and just do all the defense missions. I would often make little farms and set up tents outside with all the crafting things so people could turn over their gear without going back to their camps.

It was a lot of fun. But the variations of the meta where they tried to find different ways of making PVP more fun - it eventually devolved into trolls and gankers because their options for pvp were limited.
You could also take over multiple workshops, and fast travel between them. As long you are not sitting in a workshop all day long you shouldn't worry. Just sit in your homebase and fast travel to a workshop when you need to empty the extractors. Most high level players only go to a workshop when they want to fight another player. Fast traveling to a owned workshop doesn't cost any caps either.

I don't know,i get "ganked" by one dude the first time (never happened again) i got to the ammo factory and do my things,i've seen people blocking all acces to the workshop,so i change server and do it aswell...i feel a jerk and remove them right away.
This dude comes and change the ammo for him,i change back to my shotgun ammo, happened several times until he ONESHOT me in my power armor...
Then there are those who come and help me defend and leave me alone with the hearth emoji thing.

Yes my experience is mostly positive. Sometimes I would go a week with nothing but good experiences, then BAM out of the blue I lose everything from a few hours of work in seconds.

Yeah some of my characters I would try and maintain about 3 workshops at a time.

My problem is I really get into the building. Trying to fit things together and make them look feasible and natural. So if I am zoning out and trying to build a perfect catwalk or something I am an easy target!

It works on all workshops when you log out even in public worlds. If you are starving for ammo get an excavator and mine lucky hole mine for lead , all you need is acid to break it down and it will net you thousands of lead materials.

In private worlds you can practically own every workshop without a worry that someone will engage in pvp with you, so..................

Mh for lead i usually farm the prison cans and the weight benches + the ones in the vault tec university, roughly 200+ lead, the problem for me is the plastic, nowdays i hardly find the school with its plastic pumpkins and plates etc.. i don't know any other places than the school and the top of fort defiance to farm it.

You can also pickup weight for lead farming. There are a place at flatwoods and firestation, you can also find alot in all the missile silos.

Check the cafeteria at the hospital in charleston, there is also the work benches in charleston fire department. the satelite arrays east westek and the Benches inside Silo A,B and C for more lead and plastics. barbels, weighs, plastic and utensils. oh and also pumpkins.

If you still need more use the scrapper perk and farm westek super mutys they drop charging lasers if you break em down they give 11 molded plastic w/ the scrapper perk. hope it helps
