The same game designer did the design for Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 on the Xbox and Xbox 360, most of the feeling was kept in the Sigma remakes for PS3.

If you're able to play any of those I'd recommend it.

I absolutely love SMJ Battle Through Time. I just wish it was longer. I love the game play. I like being able to use other weapons. But not big on the guns but still love the feature

More of a platformer, less emphasis on combat though. Old-school'ish, gorgeous and enjoyable

I have the best suggestion for someone who enjoyed SJ: Battle Through Time!

You sir want to play the Devil May Cry series!

There are currently six games total, from all the way back in 2001 to its current latest installment that was released just last year for PS4/Steam and its Special Edition which was released for PS5 literally last month if I'm not mistaken.

An absolutely amazing action-adventure hack and slash game that's gonna give you everything you liked from SJ and much, much more! You'll even have the privilege to decide which one you want to pick up and play first.
Out of the six, three are from the PS2 era and contain the most classic graphics (DMC1, 2 and 3), two are from PS3/XBOX1 era (DMC4 and later DmC - a reboot/spin-off which is equally amazing) and the last one (DMC5) is the current PS4/5 version which is an absolute Masterpiece.
If you want an honest opinion about where to start from, you should definitely pick either DMC3 or DmC.
  • DMC3
The classic of all classics, the best anchor for the entire series and it sets a VERY good notion of what's coming next. Tons of fun and original concepts are present in this game and a literal must have for any hack&slash enthusiast. It is THAT good. It was just re-released February 20th for Nintendo Switch because it's that much of a classic. If you have a Switch, look no further. Did I mention it also comes first in the main story line, so you won't need any previous lore knowledge to understand the game? The only thing, though, is that if you're looking to play it here on Steam, instead of getting DMC3, purchase the HD Collection which is a MUCH better port from its PS2 counterpart and it contains DMC1 to 3. So basically you'll be buying three games instead of one, but it's worth even if you ever only play DMC3 because of its much better port to PC. Trust me on this one.
  • DmC: Devil May Cry
Highly criticized reboot when announced, it left everyone's jaws on the floor with its astonishing quality and unique game art design after release. One of the best games to introduce yourself to the series with really well polished mechanics and a very unique feeling to it. So if you're looking for something more "pretty", with more or less up-to-date graphics, you might actually wanna start with this one instead! It's a reboot, so no preivous lore knowledge required here either. The only down side, if you can even call it that, is that it has its own contained story with no sequels so far. So if you end up loving the characters, that specific iteration of them has not been seen anywhere else so far. BUT, it's still a very enjoyable experiece and I can't stress enough how beautiful this game plays AND looks. It's a very strong pick if you do decide to start from here, and you wouldn't regret it even for a second.

------

And those two are pretty much my main recommendations. DMC1 and 2, mainly 2, are a bit out-dated graphic and gameplay-wise and, honestly, you might only want to pick them up if you really wanna see how it all started. DMC1, folowed by 2, comes after 3 in the main story line which are then followed by 4 and 5, respectively, as their direct sequel. Nonetheless, you won't miss much by skipping 1 and 2 both.

DMC4 released before the reboot (DmC) so it's not as good looking, but it is a very good game nonetheless, totally recommend it after you're done with either DmC or DMC3.
And then finally there's DMC5 which is an absolute masterpiece and I'm pretty sure it's my favorite of the bunch as well. DMC5 reaches a very satisfying conclusion in the series and it honestly was everything I wanted it to be, with both DMC3 and DmC tied very close behind it. If for some reason you decide that you just wanna play the most recent and up-to-date game with the best looking graphics and polished gameplay of them all... by all means, simply pick DMC5 up and go have a blast playing it. It's all up to you. Out of all the three suggestion I mentioned (DMC3, DmC, DMC5) there are literally no bad picks.
In the end if you do decide to give the series try, simply go with whichever suits what you're currently looking for better.

Also, don't forget to stop by later to tell us what were your thoughts about whichever game you decided to play first, I'd love to hear it.

Have a good one!

I have seen the anime Devil may cry but never played the game. I will check it out & thanks for the info. It might be a while before I try it. I been all involved with Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War. It's pretty much all I play. Except for a few Warzone matches here & there.
