Co-op in a squad-tactics game doesn't make an awful lot of sense.

Just play singleplayer games for a change. There are plenty of co-op games out there. No need to ruin every other SP game by shoehorning in for those people who can't be left alone in their own company for more than 2 seconds.

Never got into games like Xcom, played games like that here and there but I'm still interested in trying it one day

It isn't really balanced for coop and would make cheesing spawn locations easy. Would take away some of the pressure of the game. Slow/pause feature would also need to be disabled for multiplayer.

Coop would detract from the gameplay in my opinion, not enhance it.

If you want something like this that's co-op, check out Red Solstice 2. Not exactly the same, but similar. Wait for a sale though.
