Saving
Am i missing some thing or is there no way to do a manual save or quick save?

There's a workaround... You can sometimes build a sanctuary to rest and that will allow you a manual save in the field.

Ya just found that out. Really wish there was a quick save. I lost about 30 mins of progression because i didn't know to create a shelter.

So you didn't pay attention to the game telling you how to create one, and what it did?

Game should absolutely have a save progress on quit function at bare minimum.

The game does have manual save, go into a room, weld it shut... it will cost you 1 tool, and that is on purpose. It's probably by design.

The game forced you to take it easy, think about your next move.

I thought at first we only had auto-save at certain points until I realize you could force a save to be created by fully welding a room shut. Now I realize why there are so many of those little house icons on the map. It is a very interesting save mechanic. It is also useful for lowering your fear and stabilizing injured characters. I kind of like this mechanic even though less convenient than the save anywhere you want. I started to look at how I can carry enough tools for saving. Besides welding doors shut to create a safe room and funneling enemies, do we have other uses for the tools?

You will be able to upgrade your Marines to carry more tools and resources.

So far the other uses i have found for the tools are:
You can sacrifice one tool for two command points.
You can repair damaged Sentry Guns and recover them with tools.

you cant save while at base either, i spent a while customizing my soldiers, but there was no way to save, exit to menu didnt save either, and now the last save was abotu 30 mins ago, which was when i got back from teh last mission.

Advancing to the next day will create a save.

good to know, im restartign my campaign anyway, upping the difficulty sliders, (keeping death clock low though, more time to play)
