They can add quite a bit of DPS to a otherwise tough fight, but they are also rather cumbersome to use and in contrast to their debut in Aliens canon they actually feel rather weak on their own.
In Aliens, two sentry guns at the end of a corridors stoped an entire swarm of drones. In this game, even on normal difficulty, a lone sentry can't even reliably stop a single drone from getting into mele range.
There are lots of places where Sentries are very potent, but also lots of situations where they are useless. As long as they are situational, I think they are fine.
Yeah, that's kind of how I feel. Feels like they're so nessesary that I take at least 2 on any mission as otherwise I know I will lose soldiers due to some unexpected boss event popping up or unavoidable onslaught.
Your squad being too weak without them sums it up nicely.
With max aggressiveness, no... I've started max game plus with that thing and its insane how they keep coming in...
I also don't mind them acting to "OP" if you put down 5 of 'em. It get's that feels from the movie when you defend ♥♥♥♥.
your grunts need to make the kill to get XP ending an onslaught/killing a cat 2
on NG+ hard they aren't overpowered
oh you're right.
yes, I set it to hard and they can juke and soak tons of bullets from a single sentry and will likely kill it
they are basically a portable extra squadmate and are really needed since they throw a ton of enemies at you and they come very, very quickly...
thank god I have multiple marines with plasma rifles. NOW THAT THING, is powerful. I have deleted entire conga lines of cultists, aliens and eggs with it.
Yep, at every diff they're a good asset.
But they're not mandatory since a good squad of marines can handle quite everything.
They turn very useful when you have to stand off in some sequences like (At Nightmare +5\+5):
-> Every boss fight that you know you can use sentries to shoot, so you place em before the boss fight.
-> Rafinery last stand (your 4 + every you find there, like 2\3).
-> Otago defence mission (Rainy night) when you placing the plasma cannons sentries become useful for extra firepower.
-> Pioneer Station AI Control Room (your 4 + every you find in the armory, 3).
-> Atmospheric processor when you have to activate 3 terminals (Your 5 + 1 turret you find there)
-> Pharos spire when you are at the office section and you have to hold position against 3 waves of xenos (Your 5 + 1 you find there)
-> Last mission, you got 2 stand off sequences (1 at the "no radar" section and another one at the last room at the end game)
These are the sequences where sentries are most useful but still not so mandatory if you are very skilled in the game.
Sentries are cheap, so don't mind to waste them. At very top diff maybe you can't gather so much materials but still, marines are MOST important... sentries are not.
Btw i'm doing some very hardcore run in these days if you want to check it out ^^:
