I don't understand why I can't go back as the events of the cutscene didn't destroy the place or anything and the map shows that they are still there lol.
As far as that datapad.... There doesn't appear to be a spot on the map of even a spec of fog of war so I'm not sure how i missed it.
I was trying to collect everything before "pioneer station" mission just because.
Yes and no. You're right, there's so many sentries in the game that losing some isn't typically a big deal, you'll have them replaced in no time. Except right after mission 3 ends, you're forced to do mission 4 one day later, so you don't have time to collect more.
The sentries make mission 4 a whole lot easier and you need them pretty much from the start of the mission. When the power loader is placing the two heavy turrets, the whole thing is a lot more controlled and less frenetic if the rest of your squad can run ahead of the marine in the power loader and set up a defensive line of sentries near the heavy turret deployment location, to secure the area in advance, before the power loader gets anywhere near that location.
To go into mission 4 with no sentries is a pain in the rear-end. Yes, you could buy three or four on the deployment screen (there's one on the mission to collect near the second heavy turret deployment point, so if you deploy with three you have space to bring that extra sentry back with you to add to your reserve stock of turrets on the Otago), but at that stage of the game materials are more limited than they are later in the game. Early game you really want to be spending your materials on permanent upgrades for your squad instead.
On my first play-through I had permissive saves on, so just reloaded my mission 3 save from before the final battle and made sure to grab my turrets just as the second wave was ending.
On my second play-through I was doing it on nightmare with the restrictive saves mode activated. I was aware of the potential issue with the turrets being left behind at the end of mission 3, so I purposely left all of my turrets behind on the Otago when I deployed on mission 3, knowing that I'd be able to collect more during that mission. It was a good thing I did, because even knowing what was coming at the end of the mission, I was slightly too slow in packing up my sentries and only managed to get one before the cut-scene kicked-in. Someone on a first play-through wouldn't know to make sure they had spare sentries stored on the Otago, as a mission 4 'insurance policy,' before deploying on mission 3 though.
