When you reach the main objective on the second floor of the mission it tells you to prepare to defend and it marks a small circle area for you to put a sentry gun in, then another, then another. This stupidly blocks the placing of sentry guns anywhere else until you do it. So if you trigger this part of the mission, but don't place the sentries where it says to, e.g. if instead you go south to the security office to pick up the three extra sentries in the special crate, but bump into an alien on the way and trigger a hunt or an onslaught, the game doesn't let you place turrets, except only in the marked circle near the door on the north side of the map!
It's silly, it should just give you the same generic are you sure/be prepared warning that it gives in over a dozen other places in the game when an interaction is about to trigger a big attack/defence event. It shouldn't still be telling you precisely where to place turrets on the fifth mission, let alone blocking all other placements outside of the indicated area.
What I do: go into that room, place the sentries, and immediately pick them back up.
If you do that, you can leave that room and do whatever you want, and use sentries normally. There's no time limit, and nothing bad will trigger until you hit the door control.
Many thanks, I thought it was a bug and got screwed several times. Very silly decision, dunno how this could pass play-testing.
