Don't try to clear the map from normal aliens, there are always more aliens in the hives, killing the ones you see doesn't decrease their amount.
Yeah you did something majorly wrong on your play if you are that bad off on story difficulty. It's a short game... look up tactics and restart.
I'd recommend watching a few playthroughs on youtube. Maybe an episode or 2 of the more experience guys. There is a sort of pacing, movement, and marine positioning mentality that you need to succeed at this game. And that's not including all the tricks you get with command points.
When I first started playing this I always bailed whenever alien aggressiveness hit medium btw. It was only till later on that I started pushing objectives and letting it ride into hard.
This guy was a good primer for me. He just sticks to objectives and doesn't get distracted by much. I sort of absorbed a bit of that and played my own way. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2F7-ekPXF18
Even just reaching "medium" alertness can be an early game squad wipe if you're in too deep and can't extract without starting a hunt.
Which boss are you referring to?
Queen, Crusher, Praetorian?
I've honestly never been one-shotted throughout my entire campaign, so I have to ask, are your marines still armored, or have you taken enough damage to strip all of their armor?
Do you mix sprinting with walking as needed? Walking allows you to keep shooting, but you're going to get overwhelmed if you don't sprint when the opportunity arises.
If you're trying to kill every alien you encounter, you're unfortunately playing the game wrong.
You don't even get any XP for the regular ones, only bosses and I think onslaughts.
Your main and secondary objectives are your main source of XP. Complete as many as you can in one deployment, leave BEFORE ♥♥♥♥ really hits the fan, rinse and repeat.
You're fighting superhuman murder machines, and your troops are essentially college dropouts high on their own farts. A level 1 squad is going to have a really tough time against 3 drones in a fair fight, you need to keep distance, utilize everything you've got, your equipment, your squad's skills, stealth, distractions, etc.
Just to make this clear, I assume you know this but I'll state it anyways:
You aren't supposed to clear a level in one deployment.
You're meant to extract once things are getting tough, once awareness is getting high, and then you can come back with all your level/mission progress saved, awareness reset to 0, and a new, fresh squad, preferably with bigger guns and higher levels.
Place more. I did this in two expeditions, one explored the map (though maybe you can unlock it if you go to the 2nd floor), placed some sonars and got all the stress, the other one avoided aliens. Another option is to use the same squad but retreat to the 1st floor to rest before fighting the boss, the problem is that the aggressiveness won't be reduced unless you let a day pass.
Well, that is the problem, there are two paths, the queen chamber has another door. Find it, send the xenos to the other side of the map, and it you won't meet any.
Also, remember you can change the slow-mo to pause, it feels like cheating, but I just can't play with slow-mo, I freak out and forget basic stuff like walking backwards while shooting.
what?
i played it on story mode and went thru
to defeat a boss alien you pretty much have to be afk
it's that simple
if you prepare the slightest bit, it goes down before it even has a chance to get near you.
you really have to sabotage your team on story mode to actually get killed by boss aliens...
how do you manage that?
that's amazing
This is the reason, its auto reload or extract for me. You cant fight with only 2 1/4 people.
I got my ass handed to me at the end 3rd mission in my first playthrough. Started from scratch and moved the hp modifier 1 step down. I was in better shape overall breezed through mission 3 in no time.
I hate to say it but I suggest you reload the whole mission and apply what you learned from your first venture.
TIP: GL can stagger the queen, keep slow mode on at ALL TIMES or just keep on pausing every 0.5 sec. Make sure you have enough CP or spam tactical analysis during the queen encounter. If possible use the abilities the will hit the queen AND other enemies but just nuking her with GL is much better. You can kite the aliens in slow mode, just dont run keep on firing. You will have these types of encounters in the future too, make sure to bring 1 RPG so you can nuke bosses.
