Why are the marines so... ugly?

The face models are so bad for the marines and the main characters ain't lookers either. Why did they opt to make men and womens faces so similar they all look like men and all look bad. Hopefully theres mod support or better faces added in the future.

They are generally unattractive, they are marines and not top models like another said, but less androgynous features and distinctions would be pleasant to the eyes. I will mostly make them wear helmets and facial hair to hide the odd facial features. I get the joke "do you ever get tired of being mistaken for a man?" but this is a a little far.

Well, it's $40, so.. they had to cut corners somewhere. Unfortunate, but I don't think they look too bad when 70% of the game is an RTS view.

And I highly doubt it's anything remotely "woke". I swear these people just throw this word at anything they dislike, so much that it's losing whatever meaning it had left.

I literally zoom in on their faces on a consistent basis to customize them and never have noticed them being particularly ugly. They look like regular people turned soldiers, at a model and resolution quality that works for a game that mostly takes place from a top-down perspective where you'll rarely see such details in the first place.

Well, I know I'm wasting my time given there's a 95% chance this is just a clown farm post.

yeah and have you seen the marines in AVP 2010? the people in Alien Isolation? even Colonial Marines. All those games character look decent enough.

i customize the ♥♥♥♥ out of my characters when im allowed to in a game but knowing that i personally couldnt find a single face even remotely decent looking a bit annoying.

Ferro, Dietrich, and Vasquez all look like normal women. They didn't have to be models and no one said a word. The female marines in this game however all look either brain damaged (face 1), like a man (face 6), or just plain stupid.

Good points on both sides, but I favor more youthful options. As it is, most of these people simply look too old to be active soldiers. It makes the Colonial Marines look like an equal opportunity employer for grey-haired bar flies and veteran lunch ladies who were deemed too hostile to employ in educational environments. It's probably for the best that Weyland-Yutani waits until things get out of hand and everyone's already dead before they send in the Marines. The colonists would wish they'd been abducted by Xenomorphs than wake up to those faces.

That said, some combinations do work. I'd like to be able to keep my near-perfect "Venom" Snake recon specialist.

adding more faces to the roster and improving the existing ones should not require much effort on the devs' part since - correct me if I'm mistaken (I don't own the game) - apart from in-game banter, regular marines don't appear to be fully voiced. If they were, the devs would need to match facial features with VO, and that could require more substantial resource investments.

And these marines that I keep seeing in various gameplays look just bad. I suspect the devs wanted to make them look like ordinary dudes, but making a guy not look like prince charming is one thing, and making him look straight-up ugly is another thing altogether.
Instead of going for the middle ('neutral' outlook), the devs chose one of the extremes ('ugly' outlook).

The whole game design works around previously set-up realistic pieces while incorporating cartoonish-out-of-proportion look for many things. Character design is one of those things. They aren't meant to look realistic or pretty. You barely see your marine's faces during the missions anyways.

Imho, developers went with lower cost, potentially longer lasting stylised, pseudo-realistic look to save costs. And put the full effort on the core aspects of gameplay - levels, atmosphere, mechanics, etc.

But to each their own. I'm ok with this choice, considering that rest of the game is great. Besides that Tindalos ins't a tripple A studio, which is felt here both in creative choices and obvious sacrifices.

True, the Characters in this game won't win a contest for good looks. Just playing "Lost Eidolons" at the moment while waiting for another Aliens: DD bugfix patch and the characters in that game are instantly likable and there is enough difference in their appearance to be interesting. I don't need actual hollywood actors in my games but at least some good looking folk.

they could just add some more face presets for people to choose from but it doesn't fix the looks of the main characters at the home base of course.

That is how we looked like in the 90s.
Sigourney Weaver nowadays is certainly not as rated as she was back then either.
