Experience gain question
Does anyone know how experience works in this game?

Do you get more points for killing xenos or on the contrary you gain most with finishing deployment without being spotted?

I've done multiple deployments on the first map (I'm in the mines now) and still my most experience troops (all 3 of them) are only level 2. Ther rest of the roster are still rookies. I've only suffered one casualty so far (playing on PS5 with slow time is not recommended).

Maybe the length of the deployment (number of rests, time spent in action) is a factor?

This is explained in the Codex, under Squad, in the Resource entry: "XP: Used to level up your Marines. Gain it by completing Objectives, Events, or killing Bosses during your deployments."

So kills and efficiency don't really matter, just making progress during each mission.

Thanks. I always forget about the codex thing.

On the other hand it is strange that you don't gain it via the kills of regular enemies.

What the person above says is true and your primary method of gaining exp. But kills also do make progress towards leveling. I use the first level to train up rookies by parking the APC near a place with lots of vents, set up 4 turrets covering all areas I can, and then spend time in the level triggering Hunts and Onslaughts until I run out of ammo. Did this 3 times for about 30 mins each and got 3 people up to rank 3 in order to assign them classes. I'm also positive there are small exp gains for using items, kills with items like mines, and picking up Xeno DNA. But unconfirmed on my end.

Keep in mind this is with all objectives done. I use the first level and spend a few deployment days there purely for training rookies. It seems to be working.

How did you manage to obtain 4 sentries on the first map? I only got 1.

Personally I like it. Way too many ways to just exploit grind it otherwise (set up sentries, back up to your ARC, alert everything and wait for max hard aggression). And besides, XP for killing trash mobs has always seemed so dumb to me. The pros of being rewarded for progress only means you get to choose any way to do it. XP rewards for just killing enemies always leads to a game that's all about killing enemies and nothing else.

It isn't strange from a gameplay perspective. Mission time is infinite as are enemy spawns. You could very easily farm unlimited amounts of XP on a single deployment.

When you redeploy after finding the first one, you can buy/make additional ones with Resources when you deploy, just like tools and medkits.

Thanks.
Think I will start a new campaign today. Too many mistakes on my part to fix in the current one.

If helpful, I did the map objectives up to the mines before recalling and I believe I got level 3 on my guys. Hopefully that gives a indication of how much exp you get per objective.

Where can I find it?

You probably have already found it, but for those that do not know please see the following spoiler

You obtain your first "free" sentry turret when you go to rescue the vet in the vet clinic. You can obtain a second sentry turret after defeating a certain mob within the mines, the final area for the dead hills quest line.
It's clear what objectives and bosses are, but what about events?

Surviving an onslaught-> 2 xp for all surviving AND STANDING marines.
The marine that kills the big xeno -> 2xp for a single marine.
If the big xeno is killed by APC or sentries-> 2xp is not given.
