Report a translation problem
It seems the initial angle is related to your camera's angle when you pick up the furniture. Try to stand in front of the wall and look straight at it or align screen edge to the floor boards, then choose the item you want to place. It's still not perfect 90° but it will be close enough not to irritate you.
I like the placement the way it is actually, looks more natural and requires some effort from the player. Just the rotating has to be more slow and smooth. Anyway, I hope devs won't replace it with simple grid snap or it will be toggleable at least.
It's quite well working for shelves yeah ! But decoratives like piano is an other story
Just have to get better at stacking.

Note: This is meant as a joke, it won't actually work as a solution. The garbage pickup will ignore things after a certain height is reached which leaves you with floating garbage. :D
