Finally able to pay for it and support the devs
I strongly recommend playing the original as it ties in closely with Mask of Truth and to get the most out of the series.

Yes.
1st game (that will be released later) is a self contained story.
2nd and 3rd (maks of...) make for sequel story. Basically one game (storywise) split into 2 games.
Edit:
That is not counting spin-offs:
- Freeware Utawarriors (never oficially translated), retelling segments of the story of original game. Very light on story (basically, if you don't know source material, you'll have no idea about what's going on). Action game reusing assets of original game.
- PS4s Utawarerumono ZAN, retelling story of sequels in Musou-type game
It only covers Mask of Deception, not Mask of Truth, and the retelling is extremely abriged, i doubt the story makes much sense if you haven't played/read Mask of Deception already. It's basically just a service for fans.
