You either play with friends or play solo.
There is no friendly fire
There is no PVP .
As for servers.
There are dedicated servers which is either locked or public open, but most of them are locked because how the game is laid out.
However, you either have to rent a server or do some steam cmd coding so to speak.
Then you also have steam friends only or solo only but you can change that setting freely.
As for maps/characters, i might not be able to explain that properly but i try as good as i can.
You can create many characters and maps, i dont know if there is a limit tho.
But the general point is you can level up several characters if you want.
Lets say you want 1 for hunting, or 1 for building, or 1 for scavenging etc.
You can also have several "worlds/maps"
Like you can have 1 world for solo, 1 world for 1 friend, 1 world for 2 friends and so on and so forth.
However, when you start a map, that map is tied to host so if you for example hosted a map and you are offline then your friends cant hop on that map until you come online and boot it up.
This is where a dedicated server comes into play and its online 24/7, or rather as long as your server sub is active or start your pc if you did your own server trough steam cmd.
The lag depends on host. or server location..
With co-op in mind, i would suggest you find some friends to play with or you dont.
I DO NOT recommend public servers because there are always griefers.
With buildings, other players can demolish your base if they want and thats why finding good players or friends to play with is good and why public servers can be bad..
Weather also plays a role, weather can dmg your base as well.
If you join a public server, build a base and goes offlline and some random joins the same server then weather can destroy your base and the randoms would not be bothered to even help repair your base.
Well mostly bcoz they didnt help build it, or they dont know the location.
If you get what i mean.
If you want to try find more like minded players like yourself, i would suggest joining the discord and try find people there you could play with.
There are 3 maps.
The base map, styx and prometheus.
However, its enough that only 1 player in the group have access to it, not everyone needs it.
But the one player with the dlc's has to host it then..
Both get the exp+ credit/exotic rewards.
As for the item reward, only 1 player get it, and that is whoever get it first .
If you are playing OPEN WORLD, then the mission cash reward and exp are given to all players in the world but only the player who claims them from the dropship gets the item rewards such as seeds, etc.
