There are visible markers that can be made. I bought the painting and crystals dlc pack, and I make glowing geode lamps. I put them down like breadcrumbs. They can be seen from VERY far away. A lot of routes in my open world are now marked by those geodes. I've got it set up so I steer straight from one to the other, with geodes on either side of bridges across the water. Allows me to make speed runs in complete darkness.
The null sector missions on prometheus introduce a path beacon tool. It plunks down poles with a super bright light on top. You can use them like breadcrumbs as well. They have the benefit of showing a small white dot on the map too. If you string them out, it will make a dotted line on the map, plus you can visually steer by the poles/lights themselves. You could make trails crisscrossing the map.
