If you're talking about the overland locations of either purple or red exotics, then use icarusintel. On prometheus, there are 168 possible locations for them. You can't do that stuff where you just run between 6 possible spawn points, like you can do in other missions on the other maps.
On prometheus, you will need a radar. Unless you want to run and physically check all 168 locations.
This is the information I found from the wiki:
"Open World
In open worlds, three deposits are present on each map (at least one deposit will be ITEM Volatile Raw Exotics Volatile Raw Exotics on Prometheus) with a potential yield of 100 to 300. Minable exotic nodes can be found in open worlds.
If there are empty deposits with no extractors attached, an exotics meteor event will occur, which clears previous radar scans, removes empty deposits, and creates new deposits elsewhere. The exotics meteor event occurs every 3 hours of prospect time (on the 3-hour mark since the start time of your 'Time on Prospect' ie 3, 6, 9, etc) if the above criteria are met. To view your "Time on Prospect," press 'I' and the time will be indicated below the list of detailed statistics on the right. Mineable exotic nodes have a 10% chance of appearing in standard caves (those with Caveworms/Bees) every three hours, regardless of whether a meteor event occurs."
If you're up to the biofuel tech level it's more lucrative to just search for and extract the full exotic nodes. Here's my guide on the topic: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3121617137
