I always recommend you play the base game first, with the olympus map. See if you even like the game before you spend any more on it. Taste the soup before you add salt.
Most of the dlcs are cosmetics packs. They don't affect gameplay at all.
Anything with "outpost" in it's name are tiny tiny self contained maps, with endlessly respawning resources. Essentially it's like "creative" mode. You can just build whatever you want there with almost no limits. But things you build there can't be taken to any other game mode. So unless you really like building on a tiny postage stamp sized map, they might not be for you.
There are a few dlc's that add new content, like the pet dlc. The pet update included some animals for free (cows, sheep, chickens, dogs), and the pet dlc added more things like horses, cats, more dog breeds, etc. It's completely optional, and things like milk and eggs are kind of for end-game cooking stuff. Not needed at all early game.
After that there are two major dlc's: Styx map and new frontiers dlc. Both add brand new maps (styx and prometheus).
Styx is sort of a hardcore/veteran/pro map. The missions, threats, weather, and events on that map are far more dangerous then the basegame map. All missions have baked in modifiers that make everything harder and more dangerous.
New Frontiers/Prometheus adds TONS of new content: new creatures, new weapons with elemental effects (freeze, burn, poision, shock), and entirely new resources needed to make those. But it's ALL self contained to that map. The items and resources can't be moved anywhere else. So only get prometheus if you want to switch to playing on that map mainly. Prometheus was designed for open world play from the ground up.
Of all of those, new frontiers/prometheus is the best value. I think it's totally worth buying, in my opinion.
One important thing to note is that if you're playing on Olympus (the base game map), there are several items in the tech tree, mainly Obsidian and Scoria (plus some others) that aren't worth unlocking until you're max level and have nothing else to spend tech points on. This is because you cannot make those items as the resources needed aren't available on Olympus.
Not entirely correct. Resources like Scoria, Clay and Obsidian, can be bought via the workshop and brought down to Olympus. Expensive way to play, but its there nonetheless.
This is true, but I find it very impractical, personally. Especially since later gear is better anyway
The DLC doesn't effect the main game or map so it seems.. Odd
you don't really miss anything no. it can technically be easier to start on like Prometheus missions due to better payouts for early missions that are very simple but you don't lose anything for starting elsewhere and having the DLCs won't affect the worlds aside from workshop items (can be brought later and can't buy without the dlc anyway)
eventually you'll want to do olympus anyway, and it is a much easier thing to start with than either of the DLCs to get your teeth into and learn
and when you get//move onto the DLCs you'll have a solid foundation and workshop items to help get established on the new maps anyway (your char can travel between them, and you can store mounts/pets/etc for reuse later on them, but they're disconnected maps and you need to drop in fresh for them)
it's not that odd, it's a map pack dlc.
and more importantly, it not really affecting the olypmus map unless you go out of your way to bring stuff means that not having them doesn't negatively impact your experience with the base map/game as you can play it stand alone without feeling stuff is missing
when you add DLC and items that have an effect across the board you end up in a situation that makes people feel compelled to buy the DLC or they are literally missing part of their own world/map via items that could be useful or actual chunks of areas just not being accessible to them, which is especially crappy when you're watching others play aswell, or talking to people about your experience with the game and it is inherently a good bit different due to missing stuff on one players end
keeping them contained means when we talk about doing X on the olympus map there isn't a need to qualify it with a bunch of * if you have stx type of disclaimers
