Caves. Iron is the most common resource found in caves. It should outnumber all the other mining nodes.

A lot of players use website that show maps with important locations on them. There are several sites, but I still like to use icarusintel. It can show the locations of all caves on each map, with descriptions of how big they are, approximately how many mining nodes, and the dangers inside (caveworms, etc).

You can also find deep mining veins for a variety of different resources. They're spread around the map at random, both inside caves and outside on the regular map. You need to build special equipment that you install on top of them, but deep veins are endless resources.

You sure? Some caves' have a rock face, closing off the entrance and need to mined open. Did you check for those?

Caves are super easy to spot even without a detector. They always have a large 'door-like' indentation in the side of the rock, and simply getting close tells you its made of minable rock.

Yeah, sorry I didn't mention that. Thought you were familiar with caves. Go to the location shown, and if all else fails, just hit the rock face. If you start mining out chunks, it's a cave entrance.

As a side note, if you truly want to be save in a cave, don't mine out an entrance at ground level. Put down a ramp, go up to the top, and start mining above ground. Use another ramp tilted down to get down inside the cave.

Creature spawning prevention exploit?
No, it's just that animals usually can't jump over the 'threshold' at the entrance and, as a result, get inside. (I do the same, only a small 'threshold' of 20-30 centimeters high without additional ramps)
