Icarus
Any way to forbid updates due to dedicated server synch/bandwidth cap?
Icarus updates are always good quality these days, but one of our number has a very draconian bandwidth cap, and weekly updates that could routinely be 40gb are too much for them. Is it possible to add Beta options of certain patch numbers/dates so that we can opt out of updates for periods of time, and allow this group member to actually play with us?

There are no weekly updates on 40GB, it is completely unclear where you got this information from.

The update today was 37gb.

No, the game updated 37Gb of files but the download was 6 or 7Gb.

I can understand i have a slow connection too and it can be a pain but i prefer an active dev team than one who stay for months without updates or communication

Today's update is 5.24GB (unusually large) This is what it says in the Steam Client.

Ok. This doesn't address my question.

If you intend to use Steam, then the answer is no. There is no way to prevent Steam from updating your files.

You could technically copy the entire game directory to a new folder and play from there - Steam would not connect to it but without a Steam connection I'm fairly certain you won't be doing any multiplayer.

Everyone was pointing out the file size issues because that is the root cause of your concern. The downloads generally are not that large. The Steam update process is just convoluted and takes a lot of harddrive time.

If you want the Devs to consider creating a monthly updated beta branch then head over here and submit your request: https://icarus.featureupvote.com/

if you guys have some kind of longrunning drama, I'd appreciate if it could be excused from this post so I can reliably get updates if anyone has input on this question vs bickering replies

agree. developer can put their last week update into beta version
. Not because of bandwidth reason, some time server doesn't update their version on time.
Not sure if steam can play beta version without update.

Steam is capable of it. Rimworld has basically every old version logged in Betas.

I submitted a featureupvote here: https://icarus.featureupvote.com/suggestions/611679/offer-beta-versions-of-previous-patches-so-people-with-bandwidth-caps-can-avoid-

Yes, but that requires the devs to maintain separate depots for the code. These are specific versions of the game, frozen in time. Not all devs do that, and it's not useful or relevant for some games to have "versions".

Many games do not do that. They only have one version. Soon as they make any changes, steams sees you do NOT have the most current version and updates it to the only version that exists any more... the new one.

By the way, rekal and pretzelfigs (that's what they're name in seems to translate to), are the two MOST helpful and knowledgeable people in the icarus forums. If you're having issues with them, says more about you then them.

Being told my concern isn't a concern isn't helpful. I don't understand how that's supposed to be interpreted other than dismissive. I don't actually care much who someone is elsewhere another time. Including if someone has beef.

As for my suggestion about betas, it's just one way to core the avocado.
