Icarus

Every week always a 30+ min download to play this game.....
I have like 3-4 games on rotation I like to play a week. I think ya know what, i have a hour or two to play tonight lets play Icarus. Load it up and BAM "weekly" download that takes 30ish mins. WHY? DO? YOU? DO? THIS? 90% of the time in that 30 mins i am downloading I find something else worth my valuable time to do and i never play a game i really would love to play but just all the hassle makes it so not worth it. Please change this to a monthly or quarterly thing baring major bugs...

funny this weeks downlaod resulted for me an Unreal Engine 4 Crash, the game is unplayable for me now.....
william_es Dec 9, 2024 @ 1:01pm
Yes, the devs update the game every week. That's what brings us all the new shiny toys.

Verify the files on steam.
Rekal Dec 9, 2024 @ 1:05pm
Your crash is most likely caused by your anti-virus quarantining something from the Icarus update. Check and put in exceptions then verify your files and you should be back in business.

The long update process is a Steam thing. Most of the wait is Steam induced. Here's how it goes:

Download the usually 100 - 200mb update -- Usually very fast, network dependent.
Make a Copy of the Icarus files -- Steam requirement, kind of slow, usually 20-40gb harddrive dependent.
Modify Copied files with update -- Pretty quick since the update is not usually huge.
Verify Updated Files -- Steam requirement, very slow cause it checks all the files copied, harddrive, memory, and processor dependent.
Remove old files and move updated files into place -- Pretty quick, just a harddrive address change.

The weekly update has kind of been Rocketwerkz thing for over three years. I doubt they'll change it now. If you have a complaint about the update process you need to create a steam ticket. Here's a Dev comment on the process: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1149460/discussions/0/4036977429247880389/?ctp=2#c4040355933298060256

Another option is you could change your Icarus update settings to update immediately (or even high priority) instead of when you try to launch it. In the Steam Icarus settings there is an update tab with various options. The Icarus Devs have been updating once a week on Thursday/Fridays for three years so you've got a pretty good idea when the update will happen. This way your update is done before you're all set to play.

There's also an option in the Steam settings in the Downloads tab to schedule the auto-updates to specific times. That way you can make sure they don't kick off while you're busy using the PC.

The lines there are just telling us what your crash report settings are and I have no access to the linked (403 forbidden) report while steam even thinks it's malicious.

Can you share the error codes from the actual report?

Kind of obvious but have you tried a restart? Not a shutdown and reboot, but a restart. They're not the same and of the two restart is a more thorough system refresh.
VladK02 Dec 9, 2024 @ 4:38pm
Well.

Its like this.

They heard you like wasting your valuable time chopping wood / mining ore, so they put a time-wasting thing into your steam, so they can waste your valuable time while you wait to waste your valuable time.
william_es Dec 9, 2024 @ 5:32pm
The developers of the game have no control over the update process. They make a new version, and turn it over to steam. Everything is automatic after that. Rekal described the process above.

The actual amount of time required can be affected by several things. For me, on my system, those updates take 3-5 minutes. There can be several things that bottleneck the process, with lack of storage space being the primary one.

If you have icarus installed to a game library on another drive, that's different to where your main steam library is installed, then you need to pay attention to storage in BOTH locations. All files are downloaded through the main steam install, and then if the game is installed on another library, they must be move sideways from one drive to another. If you're short on storage in either place, it causes issues. Steam will do a bunch of file swapping in order to accomplish it, but it waill drastically slow things down.

If you're asking the devs to stop updating the game... well, sorry, that's a no go. Most of the rest of us like getting the weekly updates. Sorry the devs work hard.

Thanks for the reply here is what i think is the error report in detail. I have zero mods atm. I restarted and I uninstalled the game and reinstalled the game, I even updated NVIDIA drivers. Says An Unreal process has crashed UE4-Icarus.

thanks Rekal for your replys,

"The actual amount of time required can be affected by several things. For me, on my system, those updates take 3-5 minutes. There can be several things that bottleneck the process, with lack of storage space being the primary one."

I have plenty of space and as far as I know everything is on one drive, I have on the weekly updates a very short 2-3 mins update and then it kicks over to another update that's like 20-30 mins. I have set it to update as soon as it gets it and not to when i load the game BUT it never does that it always waits till i load the game and then does the updates, I triple check that just to be sure.
West Dec 9, 2024 @ 9:07pm
I kinda hope I am the only one that has this problem, that would make it easy to narrow down the problem, does anyone else have this problem where you have to on a weekly basis have to wait 20-30 mins after the update to play he game.

--- LowLevelFatalError [File:Unknown] [Line: 3159] Could not find SuperStruct

I'm fairly certain this error is related to mods mismatch or corrupted files.

You have zero mods at the moment, does that mean you've used them previosly? With your uninstall and reinstall all of the proper files should be in place so it shouldn't be a corrupt file but Steam's uninstall process doesn't delete files that aren't on its manifest. So if you had an out-dated mod file or a mod that edited a file so Steam didn't recognize it to remove it then it might be a junk file causing your issues.

Over in the Support/Bugs/Help forum Rocket has this post pinned titled "Crashing on game launch typically caused by bad files applied by Steam"

https://steamcommunity.com/app/1149460/discussions/2/3195863700537487604/

It has some instructions on how to perform a cleanup of those files. That would be my suggestion for your next steps. I did a full cleanup a couple months ago out of curiosity - I wasn't having any problems - and found an extra 20gb of files just sitting around in my folder. Thanks Steam.

Unless you have the game installed somewhere else this is where Steam installs the game:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Icarus\

Well Rekel, the problem of my crashes are finally over I went in and did a deep clean of everything Icarus i could find. then I restarted and then did a fresh install of the game when I left home this morning for work. i came back and it started right up. Thanks for the help. IDK if my 30 min download a week is fixed but at least i can play the game. Thanks Again.:steamhappy:

I've been getting consistent CTDs every time I start the game each day. A verify then downloads a Steamworks redist and all is well. No idea what is going on. However, every time the game updates itself, 6 to 10 files fail to validate and I must re-verify every time. The recent CTDs started happening after I installed the Pets 'extra stuff' DLC.

The Devs no longer recommend using Steam's file verification. Try the Dev's recommended steps found here:

It crashes literally every day. I'm not going to reinstall every single time.

It just crashed on me mid mission.

It looks like they are saying that Steam is not correctly cleaning up the folder where it is installed.
