The main challenge of null sector is going in blind without being able to look everything up on map sites like icarusintel.
I've known about sites like that since the week after launch, and I would have to say they definitely warped how people played the game. Not sure if they can ever implement random world generation in this game, but it would definitely take away some people's confidence if they had to stumble through an unrevealed map. Null sector is giving us a tiny taste of that explorer vibe again.
The other big thing about null sector is the scarcity of resources, which is why it's mostly empty. Null sector might be the closest we've seen to a completely unchanged/ unterraformed section of the planet. You have to come prepared.
Without knowing what I was walking into, I basically brought a "base in a box" with me. Wind turbines, solar panels, oxygen converters, water purifiers, giant 150L water backpack, etc. I could have stayed in the null sector almost indefinitely. My character was carrying almost exactly 3 times their weight limit. It was usually 542/181. Various talents, food, and the inaris "neves" pickaxe let me run at nearly full speed through null sector.
I created a whole string of tiny micro-bases just in case (for corpse runs if necessary).
I built a whole base at the entrance to the null sector, teched all the way up to tier 4. This way I could exit the null sector and refuel, rearm, and repair before re-entering. I wouldn't have to run all the way to my main base in the grasslands. This lava biome base is also the last point where I can order orbital supplies and workshop items sent down.
I built a second base at the entrance to the icesheet. When I started bringing mounts into the null sector, I had to build a greenhouse in the icesheet in order to grow feed for the mounts.
