Icarus
Looks like I am in the minority of players that like the seed changes.
I logged in today to try the new seed changes.

~5min to make 10 extractors.
~3min to get 3 x stacks of fiber going in each

Took 20mins for the extractors to produce 200 seeds but I only had to spend ~8 getting them made, placed, and filled with enough fiber to produce that many seeds.

This is open world but in mission mode, if animal feed is what I want seeds for, from the time of touching down to the time I am producing iron nails for a ranching station I can have more than enough seeds ready for feed.

Well done devs, imo.

I don’t think it’s clear whether you’re in the minority or not. People who are upset are likelier to make comments. That’s human nature. Also. It often takes a bit to adjust to a change and in the meantime the natural inclination is to say, “I don’t like it!”

Not to be dismissive of people who don’t like the changes to the seed system. It’s just not clear whether more people like it or hate it based on forum comments.

I haven't gone beyond producing a few hundred seeds but my initial impression is that it might make farming biofuel viable.

The biggest complaint seems to be the gate-keeping of a previously inherent ability (to farm seeds by hand/sickle) and the rate at which the extractor produces seeds. I understand the initial displeasure at losing an innate ability. The extractor, however, is somewhat op. Its recipe cost in negligible and it provides 30 storage slots while occupying the same footprint as a mortar and pestle (available well before the mortar and pestle for new players). Its a godsend in open world, imo, and in mission mode it provides a very cheap storage option that also produces seeds.

That's actually a good point, seems to be a fair trade off, you can't reap seeds however you can make hundreds of them in return. Making fuel will be easier.

you do realize they could have added the grinder without removing peoples ability to get seeds right?
you DO realize this right?

Since I posted an hour ago I created two extractors from a Tier 1 tech and got over 130 seeds, c'mon it's a non issue.

this update sucks ♥♥♥♥ and you're smoking crack if you think people are having issue with getting fibre seeds
I too am in the camp of people that like this change. For my sprawling tier 4 everything mansion on Styx, it has increased my seed generation capabilities exponentially. It has made large scale farming with my buffalo so much easier since I can convert entire harvests to seeds that give way more than needed to replant the fields and then have huge stock piles to craft seed feeds from.

Early game it adds a bit of discomfort to begin with, but tier 1 is meant to be uncomfortable. Even so I still do not have issues crafting things like the seed bar if I want that as part of my food rotation for any given mission. The grinder is cheap enough to make multiples of, and it has a huge inventory so I have been using those for storage rather than building the actual storage bins when starting new prospects.

I am not saying this patch is perfect by any means. There are a couple things that strike me as odd. I think it is odd that there is only a tier 1 variant of the seed extractor. I would have liked to see that carried through the tiers to improve throughput as tech increases. Ideally with a tier 4 version that keeps things refrigerated or even outright frozen to limit decay while adding multiple stacks for grinding. The progenitive fertilizer comes across as too costly in my opinion vs the cost of the other specialty fertilizers. By the time I am in the position to be able to craft the progenitive fertilizer in bulk, I am already seed multiplying by buffalo cart farming so the new fertilizer comes across as useless to me. And lastly, I think it is just weird that there is a ghost hand that drives the seed extractor.

Just my own take on the state of things at present.

Yes, I realize that.

The change has nothing but upside in open-world, in my opinion. The ability to stockpile seeds has been dramatically increased. I personally disliked having to go out and clear cut 2000 wheat/fiber to get a decent amount of seeds. You can now get 14 seeds out of 200 stacks of wheat. No way were you getting that number from that much wheat before the patch. If they added back the ability to harvest seeds via hand/sickle I'd still use the extractors because harvesting by hand beyond just gathering enough seeds for what I need right now is now obsolete.

I can get multiple other things done in the time it takes 10 extractors to produce 240 seeds for me (1 game day) vs harvesting 240 seeds by hand. After a couple more game days where I now only need to spend maybe 3 minutes restocking fiber (in reality I spent 10 minutes collecting enough fiber for about 800 seeds yesterday), harvesting by hand simply cannot keep up when you factor all the other things I can do while my seeds passively accumulate. 800 seeds is enough feed for hours and hours of playtime.

Mission mode I think it is a boon for new players and for experienced players. There is no reason to build 1 extractor for the same reason there is no reason to build 1 mortar and pestle (does anyone do this, just watch 1 mortar and pestle make everything you need?). Drop down, make a basic torch, set a few trees on fire and start gathering the other ingredients while you wait a couple minutes for the burning trees to produce your charcoal. 10x extractors in ~5min now gives you the ability to produce 10 seeds a minute +300 storage slots for only 2 floor tiles of required space. Stockpile your seeds while you go and do what you need to do to produce iron nails for a ranching station.

No. Most people put whatever they have (or the most of) into the low tier animal food troughs. At least the people I have spoken to who play Icarus.

Like you said, you only need to feed them certain stuff for a desired buff.
Otherwise you just feed them whatever you have.

Care to elaborate? I could use 10k reds. :D

I’m all in, too! I’m all for farming 10k reds because a system is broken.
