Fishing skill tree
My friend and i have played quite a lot to this game and we both ended our builds but none of us put any point in this tree and we never fished at all. So i was wondering what fishing can bring to the player ? Compared to other skill trees and activities. Is the skill tree worth it ?

Fishing is useful for certain food recipes.

You can also catch fish and store them live in a tackle box. Those fish can then be transported across the map, and you can put them in an aquarium as decorations. Or store them for when you want to turn them into food.

You can also turn fish into wall trophies too.

Myself personally have never put even 1 pt into that tree.
I occasionally like to fish just because I enjoy the fishing mechanic. I rarely use the fish I catch. Like William stated, there are recipes that can be useful using the fresh and saltwater fish, and one day I might make a fishing room in my base decked out with aquariums and trophies.

On Styx there was a mission to make a fishing shack in one of the deserts at an oasis and then to catch a small pile of different fish. Using just fish traps and a basic rod and almost no lures, I had no issues catching rare and unique fish. As it currently stands I see no value in putting points into the skill tree for fishing.
There is an entire prometheus map mission that focuses on fishing, in the salt/geyser pools in the lava biome.

I had to build a mini-base in the area because of the increased thirst being such a hassle. I had forgot about this mission until now.

How good are the dishes you can make with fishes compared to cakes for example ? do rare/unique fish gives more buffs ?
Sadly no better food items for the rare and unique fish. Fish fall either in the category of freshwater or saltwater. There is also fish chunks, but that comes primarily from killing fish with a knife or spear instead of proper fishing.

The recipes are not likely to beat out the cakes if you are running those. In game though, press "J" to open up the field guide. From that menu select "items" and then you can do searches for freshwater fish fillet or saltwater fish fillet. Between the two there are a dozen recipes for various tiers of cooking.

Pickled fish is a good recipe for mid game. All you need is fish and glass jars. It never spoils and leaving a couple of traps down will basically give you infinite food better than meat.

As others have mentioned you can fish for trophies, which can encourage exploration of the various waters but you'd also need to get into the lures for the better trophies. I've never bothered.
Their Is the following in game:
Length of Fish tracker updates if you get a bigger one
Quality of Fish check updates if you get a better quality
Rare Tracker

3 Achievements are linked to fishing:
Master Angler: Styx and Olympus kill list
Pain in the Bass: bow and arrow kill a fish
Gotta Catch Them All: complete list in the beastery.

I made my first character a skilled fisher. All points are in this line. and same with bow and arrow. other toons are for other specific skill lines.

Leaving traps all around a lake is way better than farming animals or a farm in my opinion. None of the fish expire when they in a trap, untill you filet them and cook em up.

Training animals is very easy with filet fish, as it gives like 50% feed bar. way better than using wheat and seed. And only requires you to open a trap and pull out a fish. You can train beast very fast with limitless filets with the least amount of movement and use of minerals you have to use a pick axe on to find or a harvester.

I put a carcass down to feed an animal in a snare, not sure if that works though. the wolf or boar i tried it on always ate the deer for the initial taming.
