Defensive Structues
What is the best way to go about building a structure that lets me shoot down at attacking animals? I have used the "Trap door" floor variant, but i am unreliably hitting attacking beasts. Should I build a platform two squares from the wall and leave an empty space?

Tl;dr, Trap Door Floor isn't very effective for allowing me to reliably attack beasts.

Not so much defensive structures as AI exploiting structures ;) This is what worked for me back when I was less experienced with the game, just pick up the ramp when you're up top: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2922104951 That also allowed me to pick the radar up if I was starting to get overwhelmed -- or just repair right there in place. Once I was more experienced with things I realized how powerful melee was so almost nothing would trouble me even if they got in close past me shooting them. I also liberally used the pickup-radar-and-run method when scanning objectives started to get out of hand. For example 3 polar bears and 5 polar bear cubs with only a bow? Nope the hell right out of there and come back later.

One thing you can add is a campfire underneath if you're just trying to kill something. The animals will start burning as they mill about below you. Just be sure you're high enough to not catch on fire from them. Too high though and you can't angle down to reliable hit the critters. Just remember to crouch when on top cause that will prevent you from falling off even pressing against the edge.
If I'm in the field, I use ramps. Two ramps up, two ramps down. Like a giant A. I use these with fortification walls. I prefer to use all spiked walls all the way around. NO GATE. Be aware there a few creatures that can go up the ramps. The crocs can (oddly). And moas and the wierd 2 legged things from prometheus (I've completely blanked on their name, starts with a U). They're basically the same model.

If you're at your base, then the best thing is L shaped walls. You stand on the shorter part of the L and shoot along the main wall. Or build towers along walls. That's what towers were for on castles, to be physically forward of the main walls and be able to shoot _sideways_ along the wall. Of course, you can't see the base of the tower you're in. Defenders in the next tower over would be shooting at them.
I like to take advantage of the fact that you can't get up many walls. I then build two sloping roofs and dismantle the lower one again when I'm at the top. To attack I use either a spear or a bow with plenty of arrows. In open terrain I like to use the palisades with the defense structure (two building plans). Because the structure takes damage I repair it with the construction hammer =) the beasts kill themselves on the spikes ^^. I think for both you only need wood and fibers that have to be converted into ropes
