Thumper, BEWARE!
I think I can still salvage my playthrough. But to all who build a thumper, build it away from your base, all hell breaks loose! It's not like a radar, with little things coming at you. :D

I'm curious : do the mobs change depending on the region ? We did it in the forest and cruised through it since we were fully equipped with T4 gear. The mobs all died in a couple of bullets at most.

Basically just a bunch of worms in the desert. There's a big one called land shark and small ones like cave worms, and some that are somewhere in the middle.

That landshark spooks you the first time. Once you have the carbine though, he's pretty easy.

"Easy" is a relative term...
The "land shark"...
May have forced^ your prospector to go "tier 4"...

Not saying my prospector is an expert battling "land sharks"...
My prospector would probably run away... :)
In attempt to avoid the confrontation...

Treating^ the "land shark" as an obstacle...

Potential spoilers ahead. I would want to figure out the following for myself, but this might help someone out. Once you have the carbine, and have yourself about 1-200 yards away from the thumper, about the only thing I've seen thus far in the forest that'll still come out when you're at range is the landshark. And if you immediately run away from the thumper after engaging it, nothing/one cave worm will spawn, so as long as you have hedgehogs for the terranus's and wolves/dirt foundations/concrete frames to defend the thumper, it'll be fine with you away from it. I just repeatedly thump in the same "mini base" when I need consumables, mine out the area, and repeat. For the landshark, with the carbine equipped, press A or D, and dump mags into it. If you're far enough away from it, you'll be able to see the balls coming at you and dodge them. If I could tell anything about Icarus to a past me from a week ago, it'd be to get a deep ore scanner asap, and find a titanium deposit. Took forever to find 100 titanium in caves, and didn't want to waste 40 on the carbine, but that thing will eat landsharks, mammoths, and arctic scorpions for breakfast. And with the thumper, you have unlimited sulfur and iron, and hopefully many trees around to make charcoal. Using much less in ammo production to run the thumper than it produces in those resources. I normally carry about 300 rounds if I think I'm going to encounter something serious. No clue if it'll be enough for the more serious threats out there, though. I'm still a newbie. :D I just wish the carbine had higher durability, or a variant that cost 3x the resources to make, but had 200% durability. Or maybe even one that would need a supply of seed oil to lubricate it, the durability on the carbine is pretty low, imo. Go on a recon to scout for an exotic deposit, and half the durability is burned up. Arctic wolves are like cockroaches. :D
