No, the cairn markers are local references - and can be used as a named memorial to a lost pet (one storage slot).

Map markers, (called the "portable beacon") unfortunately, are a Tier 3 item, built at the Machining Bench.

While not a map marker I did see sometime back where a guy use stone pillars (wood breaks down) but used stone pillars to build a sort of marker on the ground and built it up sort of like a tree so is easy to see if you have the view. Not the best method but until you unlock the beacons eevntide mentioned it might be a work around at least to put some form of marking out there to reference if close enough.

I think he built the tree like 3 or 4 pillars high then put angled pillars off the sides sort of like a stone tree of sorts.
