Question about open world.
I haven't played in over a year and hated the mission based system where you start from scratch every time.
I went to try open world and it said to craft workbench to open up missions but that will take some time.
Are the missions provided extensive enough to keep you playing?
I love the fact of having missions in the open world setting but not if they are basic and uninteresting.

There's one object you make to start missions, called the Cont4ct device. It's pretty simple and easy to make. It also has two upgrades, one at tier 3, and one that requires tier 4. These upgrades unlock higher level operations (see below)

You have two types of missions in open world: smplr missions and operations.

SMPLR missions are randomly generated endless mission types. Go investigate an area, go kill some creature, recover ID tags from dead bodies. There are several types, and they recycle endlessly. To be honest, they're pretty simple and shallow. The can get repetitive. but you can get some cool rewards, like seeds you might have to purchase from the workshop normally.

Operations are the previously timed mission, but played out in open world. They work a little different, and usually don't have time limits the normal missions would have. You can only play an operation _once_ on each open world. Not all timed missions have been converted to operations... some of them just wouldn't make any sense. Like in some missions you get tasked to tunnel through rock walls in caves to reach a new area. But in open world those caves aren't sealed, they're open. There's nothing to tunnel through.

The new map prometheus was built and designed for open world. It has full storyline missions. The other 2 maps are gradually getting more and more of the missions optimized for OW and there's already plenty of them

If you start an open world prometheus map, there are 6 story missions that you play in sequence. These mission have an arching story line, and give you some cool lore about one of the factions in the game.

Also, while playing these missions the game will spawn in entire bases that are involved in the quest. And when the quests finish, they go away. The entire bases despawn. BUT, you can dismantle them before you leave the area (after finishing things), and get giant stacks of loot you can keep. Building parts, crafting stations, resources etc. I made a post listing all the stuff from just _one_ base in a single one of the story missions, which has a link below.

The later missions have bases with tier 4 equipment in them. I remember one base has (IIRC) 4 solar panels, 2 electric furnaces, an electric textile bench, a fridge or freezer, and more loot. That is stuff that would take massive stacks of electronics (all all the copper, gold, etc that entails). If you dismantle the whole base and move it into storage somewhere nearby, you can keep it ALL.

You only get to play these missions _once_ on each open world. If you don't know you can move all the stuff from these bases, you can miss out on all this stuff.

The loot you get from these bases can be kept forever on that map. When I started exploring the null sector area on prometheus, I built two forward operating bases, and much of the gear I brought to set them up actually came from the story missions. Solar panels, electric furnaces, etc. The electric furnaces you get from the story mission bases are actually the older model, where the furnace is only waist high. I kind of like them better then the giant huge fridge sized model they have now.
