Icarus
Is fishing a joke?
The excessive and overwhelming amount of effort and attention paid to something so powerfully niche with almost no payoff, really hurts my willingness to evangelize Icarus when there's worthy stuff like server stability, mounts being deleted on disconnect (this does still happen despite whatever 'fix' has occurred), the raw atrocious performance...

I almost hate Warframe outright simply for infecting the entire gaming community with token fishing garbage wedged in everywhere it doesn't belong. Ironically it DOES belong in Icarus but is completely useless.

Whoa, whoa, whoa there pardner. Don't blame warframe for fishing. That idiotic stuff is from MMO's and existed WAY before warframe added it.

I remember that idiocy all the way back in everquest and world of warcraft. And in elder scrolls online, fishing is one way to get one of the rarest crafting ingredients. There are guilds where it's MANDATORY that you show up and fish with other players, so everyone gets a group buff on fishing. Greater chance of getting that rare ingredient. You'll be kicked from some guilds if you repeatedly fail to show up. I am not kidding.

At least in warframe we fish with spears. Manly spears. Space ninja approved spears.

The main purpose of fishing in icarus is to make wall trophies, and stock your aquarium. It's for decorations mainly. Oh, and making sushi.

PS

If you think adding fishing was a waste of time, and they should have focused on optimizing, please be aware that developers might have different skill levels and talents. Some things are probably being kicked out to junior devs to work on. People who might not have ANY idea how to work on optimizing.

And the game is optimized fine. Some of the issues people are reporting are just due to the engine. And they happen in ALL games.

You're correct, of course. It's frustrating that fishing had so much attention paid, an entire tree, all these talents and items...and it's a moron's take.

I've never seen a gamer this mad that content was added for FREE lmao.

First time on the Internet?

Maybe if the fish food was worth a ♥♥♥♥.
Some people like hunting, others like fishing (me). Everyone has their own interests.
I do get what OP is saying though. Fishing is fine for the fisher-oriented folk, but for the rest of us, the investment vs reward for it just doesn't feel equal. Hoping to see more improvements on this part of the game

Different strokes for different folks.

There was a thread in here once from a guy who played as a pair with his girlfriend. Icarus was not her cup of tea. She was not a big fan of survival games.

But what she did like, was being the base maintenance & farmer person. She had every talent possible for growing crops. She also had a ton of talents for repairing the base too (all the ones I consider useless and skip). I've never seen anyone nearly max that skill tree. I don't even have a single point in it.

I'm sure there's someone out there who loves the fishing. Their house has every wall covered in every possible version of the fish trophies. I've made a few trophies, and they're actually pretty cool looking. I don't have an aquarium yet, but I have literally left a spot in my living room for one. A giant table is parked there to remind me not to build anything there.
the biggest benefit someone can get from fishing in this game, is building a house along the shore of a river/lake, with a deck overlooking the water. You can sit out on the deck with your line in the water and watch the sunrise/sunset, while fishing.

It's easy food early game, and scales fairly well with the higher tier kitchens. Also: you don't have to do it.

I remember I once spent a week in WoW fishing desperately trying to pull a low percentage drop mount... I just wanted a turtle...

this is the big take: it fits the genre well, the environ and flow of Icarus supports it fitting in, it's a nifty system if still very underbaked, I want it to succeed, but right now it has no incentive or place. Like it's a placeholder. But that kind of behavior needs to not happen anymore.

On this I violently disagree. Further on, the game is unplayable together. Dedicated server performance is abominable to the point it's almost immediately, if not instantly, unplayable. And that has nothing to do with RAM speed or quantity, g/tflops per core, or network latency. It's just bad. I do fine singleplayer not hosting anyone, but this is a game that yearns to be shared, and it's almost unshareable.

+1 to this. I'd love to see something more to fishing than just slicing them up into the same small fillets of meat.

What's interesting about Icarus is how much attention has been paid to, and passion gone into, certain systems or features, such as cooking recipes, or in this case, the design and variety of fish species and the bait used to catch them. This isn't a complaint, but an observation. When you pull back and view them within a more macroscopic context, they don't seem as integrated--or integral--to the game's operations-based progression/loop. The amount of detail given to activities such as cooking seem to be merely an end unto itself; you do it because you want to, not because it's necessary to progress.

The value of including detailed but somewhat standalone features from the onset means future content can be crafted that can incorporate or build upon these foundational elements.

Some people are just not satisfied for FREE content. They have to make a ASS of themselves.
