I remember that idiocy all the way back in everquest and world of warcraft. And in elder scrolls online, fishing is one way to get one of the rarest crafting ingredients. There are guilds where it's MANDATORY that you show up and fish with other players, so everyone gets a group buff on fishing. Greater chance of getting that rare ingredient. You'll be kicked from some guilds if you repeatedly fail to show up. I am not kidding.
At least in warframe we fish with spears. Manly spears. Space ninja approved spears.
The main purpose of fishing in icarus is to make wall trophies, and stock your aquarium. It's for decorations mainly. Oh, and making sushi.
PS
If you think adding fishing was a waste of time, and they should have focused on optimizing, please be aware that developers might have different skill levels and talents. Some things are probably being kicked out to junior devs to work on. People who might not have ANY idea how to work on optimizing.
And the game is optimized fine. Some of the issues people are reporting are just due to the engine. And they happen in ALL games.
Maybe if the fish food was worth a ♥♥♥♥.
There was a thread in here once from a guy who played as a pair with his girlfriend. Icarus was not her cup of tea. She was not a big fan of survival games.
But what she did like, was being the base maintenance & farmer person. She had every talent possible for growing crops. She also had a ton of talents for repairing the base too (all the ones I consider useless and skip). I've never seen anyone nearly max that skill tree. I don't even have a single point in it.
I'm sure there's someone out there who loves the fishing. Their house has every wall covered in every possible version of the fish trophies. I've made a few trophies, and they're actually pretty cool looking. I don't have an aquarium yet, but I have literally left a spot in my living room for one. A giant table is parked there to remind me not to build anything there.
I remember I once spent a week in WoW fishing desperately trying to pull a low percentage drop mount... I just wanted a turtle...
Oh, EQ2 back when money had weight ><
On this I violently disagree. Further on, the game is unplayable together. Dedicated server performance is abominable to the point it's almost immediately, if not instantly, unplayable. And that has nothing to do with RAM speed or quantity, g/tflops per core, or network latency. It's just bad. I do fine singleplayer not hosting anyone, but this is a game that yearns to be shared, and it's almost unshareable.
The value of including detailed but somewhat standalone features from the onset means future content can be crafted that can incorporate or build upon these foundational elements.
