I consider it worth it. It'd be more worth it for a group of friend, sure, but it's still quite good solo.
The game is definitely worth the money I paid for it, in entertainment value.
You then have to hike back to where you died to pick your stuff up. You lose at least 10 to 15% of the things you were carrying when playing solo. If playing with friends they can revive you with no loss of items, though you'd need to eat to recover your health and treat yourself if you've received wounds as these do not recover when respawning.
Apart from the above, solo is a fantastic experience with the amazing environments and soundscapes; still, I highly recommend playing with friends as well.
