Icarus
Burnt down my crib...
Important safety tip: I put a "floor torch" on the FLOOR of my wood cabin (I was about lvl. 8 at the time?) and while I hunted nearby I noticed my little base was on fire. Didn't have a fire swatter made yet so half burned to death crafting that, but alas the whole thing went up in smoke. I wish I'd have video'd that. What a lame astronaut. LOL dork.

Admittedly I did put it near a wall, and given the object's height the ceiling, also made of wood, might have been too proximate. I'm assuming the FLOOR didn't catch fire as the culprit, so it must have been the wall or the ceiling. Anyone know the rule on FLOOR torches in wood structures?

I've now advanced to Iron (10+) and can make a WALL torch. Can these be put on a WALL (in a wood house) and not burn the joint down?

Considering it's even an achievement I think that this is a right of passage for people.
I just bought the game. First achievement I got was "pick up a stick" the second was setting my house on fire.
I got out of my bedroll and stood up right into my campfire, I sprinted out of my house into the lake and set four wooden floors on fire in the process.
10/10 would panic again.

I don't know about the wall torch though.

I agree, its a "right of passage". Youve not played Icarus if youve not had your house catch on fire. There is a Youtuber who in one episode lost his Moa he had inside. It stood too close to his campfire and caught on fire and died lol. I find having water bombs close by very handy if youve not unlocked the fire extinguisher, but a huge tip I learned after a few fires is you simply can exit the game and go back in and the fire will be out.

Your floor torch caught the wall on fire. They're perfectly safe in a 1 wall high room with a flat roof. Source - I've built close to 100 3x3x1 wooden mission bases with a fire pit flanked by floor torches in the middle to light the interior and I don't have that achievement yet 600 hours in.

I prefer the floor torches because you can place them tight up against benches. Putting a bench between the wall and your floor torch works fine to avoid house fires and lights the bench and room up better anyway by being closer to the middle of the room.

The wall torches work fine too on wooden walls but they will catch wood ceilings on fire if you set them too high. Around the same height as a floor torch is safe, but I'd recommend sticking with the floor torch. Cheaper to make and does the job just fine - save your tech point for now.

I've only set my houses on fire by putting things (either myself or furniture) too close to a firepit, not a floor torch, but I guess it shouldn't be surprising that that way also works.

The first time i played i put a floor torch right up against a wood wall not realizing your stuff can be set on fire. Quickly learned my mistake, and never again lol only other time my house caught fire was because my horse walked through a campfire and set everything on fire

Yes, I think everyone here has burnt one down at some point. It sucks.

For safety, make sure there's a completely empty space above it. A sloped wood roof still counts as a _full_ space, so make sure the walls are 2 wall units high, and then either use a flat roof (floor) or sloped roof.

Or just build it ALL out of stone. which is even simpler.

This! I burned down my 2 story cabin that way. Wall torch too close to the wood ceiling.

I'm reminded of playing minecraft way back in the day.
I built a stone tower several floors tall and lines the wall with a spiraling wooden staircase.
Then to light it I made a hole in the center of the roof and dumped lava down so the pillar of lava with illuminate it the whole way down.
Had no idea the lava would radiate enough heat to ignite the stairs from a distance.
