Each device can only have one direct connection. If the filter is connected directly to the water barrel then you cannot add a second connection to your kitchen devices. To get around that you need to create a network.

If you left click on a device and then click somewhere else along another surface you will create a node. These little hockey puck shaped nodes can then branch off to multiple devices and that's how you connect all of your network. The same applies to the electrical network.

Here's a screenshot of my workshop's underbelly with the water and electrical connections highlighted: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3124339379

As far as I recall, I don't think the pipes care about what's connected to what in a linear sense. You just need to have the various items connected to the network. Barrels are considered water storage so they'll fill up as the pump makes water available on the water network and will be pulled from if there are devices on the network that consume water.

I had thought I could use the barrel to fill water troughs when the pump wasn't active but troughs are considered water storage also (storages don't fill each other).

I ended up just creating a series of pipes to reach the various parts of my base that needed water then branching everything I connected to the water network off that main pipe. So you could run some pipe next to your kitchen and have the barrel be a branch off that and the kitchen another branch. Since the barrel is an endpoint of sorts, I think it won't want to connect another pipe to it.

Not sure if it's a bug or intentional but that's how I interpreted it. I think troughs might work with piping going to and from it but that could also be a bug or just intentional to allow multiple troughs to be connected together. Dunno...

I would really prefer water toughs to count as consumers...

Same. It annoyed me to no end. I'm like, I have a barrel with 300k units of water and these troughs are dry...wth?!

A bit more granularity would really help, the troughs deffo but also being able to designate a barrel/rain collector as a source with the pump as backup.
