Purify rain water
There doesn't seem to be a way to take water from the rain reservoir and dump it over charcoal in any of the filtration stations. So this means the rain reservoir is useless b/c you can't purify the collected water. Yet we can purify water from a lake or pond but not water we have collected from the reservoir.

i have never gotten a parasite from water out of the rain reservoir.

There is a 5% chance to get sick from a rain catcher now.

I think it's also gonna depend on how bad dysentery is. 5% isnt a huge chance and if it can be treated fairly easily, I think rain reservoir is still useful early on. That said, it might be an oversight too? Maybe should do a post on the bug upvote thing? It def seems like something you should be able to do

Well...
The rain reservoir may suggest that there may be "mosquitoes".
The rain reservoir may be just a big mosquito spawn... with little larva swimming in it...
>_<
Larva produce waste... ("Spit"..."Blah"... :steamfacepalm: )
"BLAH"... @@* ...
:P
I grossed myself out a bit...

"Blah" >_<

I'm gonna try to see if my prospector can craft water purification quickly.

If you look at the tier 1 rain catcher it looks like water goes in at the top at comes out the bottom as filtered. So, in theory, we should be able to take water from the reservoir and pour it from containers into the rain catcher. But there is no interaction prompt to do so. As far as I can tell it is not possible to filter out rain water captured in the reservoir with the current system. The tier 3 requires pumped water from another source.

The higher tier metal rain reservoir can be plumbed. There is also a water barrel that can be plumbed. I presume you could move the water manually from the T1 rain reservoir to the water barrel but at that point why?

I did bug report not being able to input water into the T1 rain purifier like you can the T1 rain reservoir. The rain reservoir can still be used for filling water troughs and cooking so... /shrug

The most annoying part for me was to find out that you cannot use the metal rain reservoir to fill the barrels with water (connected by pipes). Hope this was an oversight (or a mistake with my connections but didn't find one). My plan in T3 was to use the metal rain reservoirs and if they exceed their maximum capacity, they would fill the barrels but they do not, works with a pump thou but my base is far away from any water source except rain. Now I just built plenty of the reservoirs to have enough backup between rains even the barrels would be the logical way to do.

I wish I could get that far. I have a canteen and a thermos. I waited for rain to fill the metal rain catcher so I could empty the containers and refill with clean water. What do I get? Dirty water.

Rain catchers also catch Kea poop.

Well you're in for a treat. The chance to develop parasites seems to be a 5% chance on a tick, with a 5 minute timer. You'll get it pretty regularly.

Just a little relevant info drop: The game penalty isn't really horrible, it just sounds gross - Dysentery -50% food nutrition. Which means you just eat more, or simply eat before you drink to completely ignore it. It's also preventable with the anti-parasite pill and cured instantly with the tonic as well. Same as komodo bite and bee stings.

Five new levels of water quality:
  • Tainted Water - 15% chance for dysentery. From lakes, rivers, and cave puddles.

  • Rain Water - 5% chance of dysentery. From rain catchers and melting snow at a cooking device. No boiling recipe yet, vote it up - https://icarus.featureupvote.com/suggestions/214264/suggestion-boiling-water

  • Filtered Water - 0% chance of dysentery. No buff, just like water before. From handcrafted purifiers using charcoal or the new crafted water treatment tabs.

  • Treated Water - 10% reduction in water and stamina consumption. From plumbed sink (no charcoal required, might be a bug since the sink requires composites the highest tier material in the game), the water plumbed purifier that requires charcoal, or the new workshop water treatment tab. Water pipe tool and pumps tier level were reduced so a water network is now available at the machining bench tech level.

  • Purified Water - 15% reduction in water and stamina consumption. From plumbed and powered water purifier.
Canteen water purity is saved in your orbital stash as well. So you could send purified water via OEI from an advanced Open World/Outpost base to any new mission or open world you're working on for the great buff.

Edit: Just submitted a distillery suggestion as another option, upvotes are free! https://icarus.featureupvote.com/suggestions/542215/distillery-water-purification-medical-alcohol-first-aid

when making tea and coffee it gets boiled on the stove. using rain water for this does not purify it it just adds the specific beverage bonus. IMO this is crap. it should also remove the 5% dysentery because of said boiling.

I've noticed this as well and I tend to agree. I believe that you should NOT keep the bonuses from treated/purified water as well. If you make coffee or tea from purified water you should (IMHO) trade the purified water bonus for the bonuses that coffee/tea/whatever gives you.

Well, in real life, boiling water only takes care of bacteria, viruses, and parasites. While this may sound like 'ok, it's safe to drink now!", you might be wrong. If there's other chemicals, such as chlorine, or heavy metals that got into that water, such as lead, boiling it won't do squat, but purifying it will.

Likewise, making coffee/tea with filtered water vs boiled tap water makes a HUGE difference! Where I live, our tap water tastes bad due to the minerals in the water. They're not bad for you, but when making coffee that taste carries over and alters the flavor of coffee for the worse.

So from a game design standpoint, your suggestion has merit, but if you were thinking that the way it is now isn't realistic, it depends.. The fact that it gives you dysentery which is caused by bacterial or parasites in the water, yeah that shouldn't be happening if you boil it. But it causing you to get sick even though you boiled it to make your coffee, yes that can happen. It won't be caused by dysentery, but you can get sick just the same.

Side note, I don't even worry about it at all, because I'm usually eating three different foods to keep my buffs up at all times, and even with dysentery, I never have a problem keeping my food meter topped off. This is purely an early game threat when food is scarce.

I've been camping since I was a kid, served in the military and traveled the world. I'm well aware of how drinking water from a natural source isn't always safe.

If I wanted a realistic water purifying experience, I have the skills to jerry rig a reasonably effective makeshift water filter in my back yard. After filtering and boiling it would be FAR better odds than drinking raw water, but I don't feel like getting girardia in spite of doing everything right.

I am definitely talking about a gamey system since, it's y'know...a game.
