It depends on the mission you are in or the Open World range - Think the range is from 180-220 per deposit?
having more than one extractor doesn't affect the final yield, just the time it takes to digg it up :)

Animals may attack the extractor. It's best to fortify or defend it.

Or place a creature deterrent. The bio-fuel deterrent will last the entire extraction time as long as you empty the drills before they fill.

I always build a shelter on top of the drills so I can AFK while extracting and the deterrent makes that easy.

I've never had an animal attack it. I leave them laying in the open and never have had an issue. They will however attack the radar when it's active.

The exotics extraction drills don't actively call in animals. It does however agro them if they wander too close. Just like if they were to wander too close to you.

You can prevent a lot of them them from being a problem by just setting up a fence around the area but some will still jump the fence. The creature deterrents work well for the same reason.

For laughs, I spent a whole outpost session gathering exotics. When drop ship took me back to the workshop, it said I had none.

Did you send the exotics up separately using the drop pods from the Orbital Exchange Interface? If you tried to bring them in your dropship with you they'll get deleted.

Thanks Rekal. That's what I was doing wrong.

So will creatures attack them then? I must have been lucky all this time as I've never had to repair or defend them.

I feel your pain. I did the same thing though I didn't lose as many as you. :steamsalty:

Yes, the aggressive creatures will agro and attack the exotic extraction drills. Even when they're not turned on as long as they wander close enough. It's a different range for different animals, but they agro just like when they agro on players.

First the "What's this?" pause at a certain range, and then they wander closer and start biting. They will absolutely bite through any shelter or buildings you place around it as well. Just like they would if they were gunning for you.

Why you haven't experienced it? Perhaps you've just gotten lucky with your nodes being in less trafficked areas. Or you were out hunting the nearby critters in boredom while you waited. If you cleared the area and then ran off to some other area the critters probably wouldn't spawn and walk through the extractor while you were away either.

I made it an objective on all the Olympus and Sytx missions I ran to grab the exotics while I was there (except the 3hr Styx mission, F that). Most of those missions were before the creature deterrents were introduced. I've got plenty of experiences while AFK hearing some kind of animal noise over the drills forcing me to scramble back to the game to try and defend.

It got so bad at some nodes that the first 5 minutes of the extraction was me crafting and putting up wood walls double high and four blocks away from the drills all the way around. Just to keep things at bay - they wouldn't attack the walls unless they agro'd on me or the drills so it kept things mostly quiet.

Thanks for your reply Rekal. That would be why I haven't encountered any attacks because I set the drills then skadoodle away. I clear all critters before I take off.
