No, it was definitely a torch, and he definitely threw it with his hand. I'm pretty sure it was an older version of Icarus cause he carried it in his hand. I've tried and can't get a lit torch in my hand.
If you want to see far, the best early game thing to make is the biofuel lantern. Gives a cone of forward light, but be warned that it's mounted on your hip, so some actions with tools or weapons cause one of your arms to move in front of it. This can include holding a bow, with an arrow knocked.
Skip tier 4 flashlights, they are almost useless unless you're put it on the hotbar and select it from there. You end up holding it reversed in an overhand grip (head of flashlight next to the heel of your palm/little finger). Remember forest fires are not your friend.
