Icarus
Games similar to this one specifically?
I've tried Subnautica and Conan in the past. I can appreciate them, but this one seems to hit the spot a little more. I'm not quite sure why- maybe because the setting is a little less scifi/fantasy? I also like the more realistic art direction. I'm not sure how this game stacks up to the genre overall- are there similar/better games in the ballpark of this one? I've been looking at Green Hell and Valheim, but I'm not sure if those have an open world mode?

Valheim only has open world mode. With a random generated map.

Is it forced pvp like Sons of the Forest?

I feel like I've played a game very much like this one before; one where you land in a drop pod and have a timer to complete missions. I'd think it was this one, but Steam says this is my first time playing Icarus.

No, it's more coop oriented. I think you can enable PvP individually if you want though. But you cannot hit characters that have it disabled, if I remember correctly.

Valheim is not open servers. Multiplayer aspect is invite only.
"Public" servers exist but theyre rare. The dev team has nothing to do with server hosting, you have to host it yourself or pay a thirdparty to do it for you.

Most similar to Icarus seems to be ARK, but that was wildly complicated and not intuitive at all, at least for me.

Theres tons of games like this, for example green hell, son of the forest, raft, one thats similar to raft and rust that came out not too long ago, fountain of youth, breakwaters, 7 days to live, lens island, project zomboid, and more. All survival games are opened world.

It's a survival game like many others, same concepts. However, I'm loving this game after probably putting 14K or more hours in ARK... The building is second to none. By far better than Ark's new remake garbage.
