At the very least I'd recommend using a radar at least once at your base to get a general direction to head off to.
Where you can see their location https://www.icarusintel.com/
Likewise in OpenWorld, I personally have not seen any messages or mentions anywhere that the exotics deposit location was organized in any other way.
They are. In certain _missions_ only, on certain maps, you can almost skip using a radar and just run around. Olympus map is the easiest to do this on.
Spiritwalk exploration on Olympus has only 6 possible spots for exotic nodes, with 3 guaranteed nodes. That's a 50/50 chance you find exotics at any of the 6 spots you go to. 1 spot is in the polar bear zone. And all spots are essentially in a giant circle around the outer edge of the map. You start in the upper northwest corner in the riverlands, and I suggest going south. The desert in the lower southwest corner is a cakewalk. VERY few predators. You can quickly reach 4 of the 6 spots, before you have to consider even going into polar bear territory or the crazy desert in the upper northeast corner. If you're lucky you find all three deposits in one of those 4 spots.
Beachhead: Recon has 3 possible spots, only 1 actual node. They're close, medium, and far from the droppod. You can land and start running. You have a 1 in 3 chance of finding it at the closest site, then try the next. The last site is a pain because it's grand central station there. There's an INSANE amount of wildlife in this one tiny corner. Stuff spawns like nuts. Build walls around the extractor.
You can't play the running game on the Prometheus map though. There are 68 possible locations for the nodes. Only 4-5 nodes. Trying to run around would be stupid. Very stupid. You need a radar, and highly recommend a workshop radar.
Beachhead: Recon is a simple mission, it's the first one you do on olympus. Basically get out of the pod, get back in, you're done. I think there are some mission requirements, but they're incredibly basic, like pick up some sticks, etc. If you came there to extract exotics, you'll be accomplishing them all anyways.
There ARE exotics on the mission though. One node, at three possible locations. The node only gives 80-120. If you have to build extractors, this is basically a waste of time. It really only becomes useful if you can spam the mission by using workshop radars and extractors (that you already own by spending exotics). You'd have to buy a workshop extractor power cell each mission. But the map for beachhead:recon is _tiny_. You don't have free roam, you're basically stuck in one long valley.
Spiritwalk: Exploration is the mission to do if you're going to have to tech up from the beginning OR bring workshop radar/extractors. Three nodes total, only 6 hiding spots. The nodes are very large.
All of the "exploration" missions have three nodes, but spiritwalk has some weird quirks. Spiritwalk only had 6 locations for exotics, but the others have 10 locations (more places to check, takes longer). Spiritwalk only has one location in the arctic (polar bear zone). The other explorations have 3 of the 10 in arctic biomes. 2 in wolf zone, and 1 in polar bear zone. You will probably want to tame a moa for the mission (to use it's G-item carry slot to carry one of the two big items: extractor or radar). Taming just requires making nails, so you need to melt some iron, make an anvil, etc. And fur, you'll need to hunt some stuff.
On spiritwalk exploration, you start very very near a massive cave. This cave is right next to the the "F2" marking on that map grid. You have to swim through a lake next to a waterfall to get to it. The cave has no worms and tons of mining nodes. The weird thing is you might have to build a wood house inside the caves. Parts of it don't count as being in shelter. But you can build a 2 x 2 hobo shack pretty easy. All the drop pod locations will be along the river that leads south from that lake.
Spiritwalk: exploration just has that 1 weird difference from the others, in that it only has 6 possible locations, and only 1 is in an arctic biome.
After you collect one exotic deposit, a meteor shower will occur and then the exotic deposit will be updated. To find where they are, you need to use radar.
