Double clicking to put the waypoint marker is good I suppose but you can only have 1 marker and it doesn't persist between loads.
https://icarus.fandom.com/wiki/Portable_Beacon
There is a beacon from quests, but for some reason it doesn’t work fully for me.
So as stated above you can craft beacons or get them from rewards on open world missions. (which is just dumb) I've never played an open world survival game that did not just let me make map markers.
So I just use this interactive map and make my marks on there: https://www.icarusintel.com/
It also shows a lot of information for missions, resources etc.. Very useful tool. Some say it's cheating but whatever.
You'll get a marker for tamed animals by the way. So you can park one in a stable near something, get a free map marker that way.
If you want to place a map marker just look at the beacon recipe and make some.
It's like in the real world, you need to place a transceiver in the environment to make the transceiver be a thing. Our little beacons are a pinger. It's kinda analogous to real world beacons.
I was forced to use an online map, that unfortunately showed all the caves, so because the of this patently ridiculous design choice you are basically forced to cheat, and lose out on the ability to "discover" caves.
+1 100% it's just lazy... dumb.. more busy work for us to gather more resources.. we have the technology to go up to space and come back down, and they can mark our map for us in missions.. but I guess that is all just for show lol
The Portable Beacons require the T3 Machining Bench and here's the cost breakdown:
- 12 Gold Ore
- 10 Copper Ore
- 60 Iron Ore
- 10 Coal / 200 Charcoal
- 10 Silica Ore
- 25 Platinum Ore
And all the beacon does is add a point to your map and HUD.GPS is a thing and even if it wasn't inertial navigation is stupidly easy when moving at human speeds - most modern smart phones can do it. If our map is high tech enough to position us perfectly, it should be able to save a few addresses. Our phone's GPS can do it right? At the very least we should be able to pencil in a mark that doesn't go away - We got wood and charcoal right? I'll even craft the pencil if I have to!
In comparison, here are the materials for a device that is self powered and lets you communicate all the way to orbit two-way while also giving accurate landing coordinates - the Orbital Exchange Device which only requires the T2 Crafting Bench:
- 14 Iron Ore
- 14 Copper Ore
- 10 Wood
- 120 Fiber / 50 Leather
The C0NT4CT Device is even cheaper using only Iron instead of Copper. Why can't I just modify one these to send out a location ping? It'd be so much cheaper.I totally agree with this thought. Not only what Rekal has mentioned but the fact that no text can be associated with them when assigned to a map position. Even 5 characters would suffice. I do not normally use them for caves locations but I do for nearby important deep mining sites, my bases (both main and biome exploration) and I also sometimes plop one down on plant locations (especially hard to find Yeast) on Prometheus so I can return later to see if others exist. Beacon material cost is too high as is although I tend to find myself having enough materials to make them. Solo player, natural grinder player.
