You're right about how to equip the envirosuit. It's the only item from the workshop you need to return to orbit and change into directly because you can't change it while on the planet.
But as already written above, you can always return via ‘Load’. You cannot leave a Mission because it is synonymous with their completion;
Outposts + Openwords is a persistent world and they can only be deleted by force. (although there are also backup files there)
As others pointed out, open world are persistent. When you create an open world session, you give it a name. It should show up in your listings when you go to open world, just choose the named world.
By the way, you did good by putting all your stuff into storage in the open world. It will straight up delete anything that's not a workshop purchased item when you go back up to orbit. Some people have found this out the hard way. In my prometheus open world, I have a little 1 x 1 house, with metal cabinets inside. I have it in the center of a landmark that shows on the map, and happens to sort of be in the middle of all potential landing sites. I get out of the droppod and run to the little hut to get my gear out. I've built in-game versions of many workshop items, so some workshop things I don't even bring anymore.
I think another issue is that I may have built the suit in one of my other "prospects". So I deleted all the other ones except the one I've progessed so far on.
You should only have what you bought from the orbital workshop. Things made on the planet below will disappear.
{I need to remove the armor as well, go up to the station, change out suits there, then come back?}
4) The only thing that cannot be ordered this way is an envirosuit. To change them, you will need to personally climb up into orbit, which, for example, is not suitable when performing Missions.

PS By the way, if you are concerned about the safety of your Openworld, you can save it periodically (as I do).
(including everyone reading this): always regularly save your Icarus to a separate folder on another partition of the drive (or flash drive). (disable Steam clouds, otherwise, when you manually return your saves, there is a chance that Steam cloud will return the original saves.)
-------->! You need to save the entire directory c:\Users\”name your windows account”\AppData\Local\Icarus\Saved
