How is that cheating? We start on a space station in orbit. Why wouldn't we have access to detailed scans of the surface, with annotation from fellow explorers??
Red exotics are on prometheus only. If you don't own that DLC, can't get those.
On promethus there are 174 possible locations for exotics to spawn. Most missions will have 4-5 nodes. They added so many spawns to make using a radar necessary. In older maps like olympus, the missions might only have 6-10 possible spawn locations. You could simply physically run from spot to spot and use eyeballs to check where they are. It was actually faster then bringing and using a radar. 174 spots makes the radar necessary.
_highly_ recommend bringing a workshop radar. Fastest and most accurate scans, and on prometheus, you need some experience reading the results. You can't re-run the radar too close to the last spot. So if you're not good at interpreting the yellow rings/arcs, you will be doing a lot of travelling to get far enough away to re-run it again.
Red exotics only spawn in the volcanic biome, in the upper north/east side of the map. They have changed missions to guarantee at least one red exotic spot per mission (previously it was possible to have 4-5 just purple exotic spots, which was nice... but we came there to get reds).
Volcanic biome is rough. You will need at least 1 of the suits for that area...
"heavy obsidian" is low tier. Literally big slabs of volcanic glass strapped to your body. Imagine armor made of tree bark, but it's black glass instead.
"Obsidian" armor is ultra tier 4. Requires composites, platinum weave, and an electric textile bench. Oof. BUT... this armor rocks. You can literally fall into lava and it's a minor annoyance at best. Get out of the lava, drink from your canteen to put out the fire, and you will have lost only a tiny sliver of health usually.
Bring multiple canteens of water. And if you can make alterations, there's one that reduces water consumption. Highly recommend that installed on the helmet.
My usual go to is the tier 4 obsidian armor with Mk II stealth X 3, mk II pockets on the gloves, and the reduced water consumption on the helmet. The stealth alterations add -60% perceived threat while crouched, and +60% move speed while crouched. Basically, you're an invisible ninja... as long as you crouch. With the other perks I have, my crouched speed is only slightly less then normal walking/trotting.
Regardless of how you get exotics, you can only send them to the station and get credit for them by using an Orbital exchange. Super low tier item, made on the crafting bench. Need about 1 iron node, 1 copper node, and some other stuff. It's a portable item, can be picked back up after use.
I carry an orbital exchange _all_ the time.
Has two options. Order an empty pod or order an item from orbit. Either way, you end up with a pod parked on the ground, with flashing green lights. Put the exotics in it, send it back to orbit.
Exotics are credited instantly. You could literally spend those exotics to unlock something, make it, and request it be sent back down while still in the same mission.
So the expected game play on a mission is to build up your base and tech. Complete the mission objectives. Use a radar to pin point where the exotic nodes are. Travel to the nodes with an extraction drill. Extract the exotics. Use the orbital exchange to cash in the exotics. Leave the mission.
This mission format is why I find the game so appealing -- it's a survival game with a clear goal and end. Go in with next to nothing, build up, finish the mission, take the loot and leave.
As william_es said Olympus and Styx missions only have a few locations the exotics nodes will spawn - the interactive map has a drop down you can select a mission and it will tell you exactly where those limited locations are. So one or two radar scans can usually narrow it down considerably.
That mission is no longer required. It doesn't unlock anything anymore. It doesn't even unlock the workshop radar and extractor like the flavor text says. I had to start a new character after I missed the data migration, and found that you can skip that mission entirely now. Yay!
If you only want purple exotics, the best mission is to play "Spiritwalk: exploration" on Olympus. All the "exploration" missions will have guaranteed three spots for exotics, and each node will have from 200-400 exotics. That's the largest amount for any single mission on olympus.
Spiritwalk: exploration specifically has two quirks, that make it a better choice then the other explorations missions:
It only has 6 spots for exotics, instead of 10 potential spots. Since the map is set up as a circle around the central arctic zone, it's possible to actually skip using a radar, and just run on a mount around the map. Radar is still a useful thing to bring thoough.
Only 1 spot is in the arctic (the polar bear zone). The other explorations have 3 of the 10 in the arctic (2 wolves, 1 polar bear). I get to the point in the southeast corner of olympus where I'd either be going into the polar bear zone, or continuing north. I run a radar to tell me if it's in the arctic or not. If not, I skip it.
heck, some nights I just skip it anyways. Mine out only 2, ignore the one in the arctic, and just start another mission. The arctic zones are sometimes a pain to mess with. Especially after they added the giant scorpions.
That's not cheating, it's using a tool provided to help locate resources.
Exotics you harvest from strange plants and exotic trees are raw volatile exotics and you should NOT send those to the station. They must be processed with organic residue cleanser first, then you get the real deal.
Guys... I was joking. xD I don't think maps are cheating, I was just trying to be silly. Sorry if it missed the mark. ^^;
I have done exactly zero missions, because I was more focused on leveling and just enjoying all the other aspects of the game.
Openworlds (Outposts) cannot be erased, it is a persistent world. They can only be erased by hand.
Your character can be on any number of missions or open world maps as you want. Your Workshop equipment though is limited to one drop and can be lost permanently. With that gear restriction it does make more sense to keep the character to one map at a time unless you buy multiple sets of gear.
So if you wanted to use your workshop gear on your open world map you could request it be delivered using the Orbital Exchange (you can purchase through it too) without leaving the map. If you then wanted to use the same gear on a mission you'd have to ride your dropship back to orbit with the workshop gear - no sending it back alone as far as I know. Just be aware when you leave your Open World map any gear you're wearing that you have crafted is not from the workshop thus destroyed - so dump everything you created there in a box before you head out.
You can even leave Workshop gear in your open world. It then becomes "settled" instead of on a drop with a character. It's still unavailable to use elsewhere but you can pick it up and bring it back anytime you want.
If you leave Workshop gear on a mission, either because you forget it or you've lost it somewhere it is gone permanently. That's where the Insurance is useful.
*Edit: Only the workshop purchased equipment that is, of course.
Thanks to all that have replied so far.
