Base game is 2 maps Olympus and Styx. Plus some outposts (some of them are paid DLC).
New Frontiers adds Prometheus map, some new ores/craftables here and there, a couple of new biomes.
Character progress is saved between the runs (tech tree unlocks and talents), there is a workshop where you can buy items to go to mission with.
Game can be played in 3 ways:
1) Mission-based: you drop on a map, with a few items you brought with you (or without any) and try to complete mission goals in a given timeframe (from few hours to 30 days). Time ticks only when you actually play that mission, if you fail to extract before time runs out - character is lost forever (you have "insurance" option to still save it). That type is the only one where you can earn exotics right now, exotics are used to buy some high tier equipment in workshop. Good place to unlock new recipes and earn exotics.
2) Open world: you drop on a map, you have no time limit nor mission goals, you just freeroam and it's sanbox-like experience. You can build communication device that will generate simple missions like gather some ore, kill x animals with rewards like cratables and resources. Created run is saved locally and you can leave/return to it any time you want, it's persistent. Good place to start and learn base game, level up a bit.
3) Outposts: reduced XP gain, resources regenerate every time you load an outpost, very small territory with usually no severe hazards like weather/agressive animals. Best place for sandbox creativity.
So, game has enough features on it's own, expansion just provides more of it.
The base game has a lot of content. I've been playing it for 700 hours, so the devs must have done something right.
Styx is a separate map, with a more hardcore experience. Everything has baked in modifiers on Styx. Animals have more health, can detect you easier, etc, etc. On a scale of 1 to 10, styx is dialed up to 15. The weather is especially nuts. Think hurricane level winds, electrical storms that torch whole forests, category F5 tornadoes, freezing rain, and the list goes on.
The first two maps, Olympus and Styx, are areas where the terraforming mostly worked. Earthlike animals mostly with a some weird alien cave worms that spit acid, and a few other twists.
Prometheus is the first map where players can go into areas where the terraforming did NOT work so well. It's hard to tell if the creatures are a blend of earth and alien DNA, or just outright alien stuff that survived the terraforming. First glimpse of what the planet might have looked like before the terraforming was done.
If you want extra maps and extra missions, you can consider some of the DLC's. You'll find more info here : https://steamcommunity.com/app/1149460/discussions/0/3818543331795444239/
New Frontiers (new world Prometheus) -> this is new setting.
At the moment, I have already played a total of about 1200 hours (350-400 hours on the Steam version) Olympus (Openworld) + Olympus Missions and have never even logged into Styx, because there is no time. On Olympus (if desired) you can always find something to do. Mostly building and traveling around the map (mini quests SMPL3).

So this is what I’m writing all about - that for some reason the presence or absence of a new DLC doesn’t interfere with me to play either now or before.
New expansion has more enemies that are more of an alien nature.
Styx was free for a year after game released, New Frontiers was always said to be paid DLC.
For some time after launch there was a "founders" edition that included first 2 expansions for free, but it is no longer available.
It is more about misinformed people angry about missed chance to get stuff for free/ less money.
And now some fans of getting everything ‘free’ want it too - that’s the essence of the whole very strange story.
Formally, this is a PvE game, I personally did not play multiplayer with anyone, but on the other hand, I personally do not know any restrictions for PvP. It is possible to cause damage to other players, as well as blow up, burn, rob their buildings.
Yeah, it's part of the zeitgeist of the times. People have been conditioned to poop their diapers and then scream at the top of their lungs until they get their way, and are rewarded. If you didn't buy the supporters editions, it shouldn't be free. That was a promise made to the supporters early on, and the devs said if they handed out New Frontiers for free they might have to be in the position of refunding "something" to the supporters edition... since they aren't get the bonus they were promised.
Plus, if a studio doesn't charge enough to stay alive, it will allllllll gooooooo awayyyyyyyy. I got lunch on the way back from taking a state licensing exam today. Spent 16.84. That's about half the cost of New Frontiers dlc. lunch for one day. It's NOT overly priced. Lunch won't last forver, but the DLC will.
This is a solo or co-op open world, survival, crafting base-building game. So If you do not like co-op or solo 7D2D, ARK, Conan Exiles, Valheim etc.. then you will not enjoy this game.
It is YOU vs. the environment that's it.. killing wolves, bears, jaguars, elephants, mammoths, scorpions, polar bears.. etc.. on the first 2 maps
Then on the new map they add different creatures but same thing.. you vs. AI animals with objectives to complete.
