Did they change mxc fuel canister?
I was unable to return the mxc fuel canister to station. If the canister is still full and haven't been used, you can still return it. However, once the biofuel is used for something else, you're no longer to return it, even you refill the canister.

Very strange. MXC Fuel Canister https://icarus.fandom.com/wiki/MXC_Fuel_Canister
It says {It can be taken back to Orbit and will remain filled, allowing the Prospector to use it across multiple prospects. It does not fill when returned to station.} That is, it should work like a canteen or oxygen tank.
I haven't checked this personally yet. (the fact that a partially filled one is no longer returned) Perhaps this is a new bug.
PS Clarification: this or that object must be returned to orbit by the one who lowered this object from orbit.
I confirm that the MXC canister that I lowered and spent a little into orbit did not return - it simply disappeared.
I spent a little, filled it out, sent it, but didn’t return.
I ordered it, delivered the module, moved it to inventory, returned it to the module, sent it, and returned it.
Perhaps there is a bug or the operating principles have changed.

Generally, as long as an item is not opened or "consumed", it can be returned to orbit. I have returned unopened/unconsumed arrow bundles and other items.

Anything that is partially used can't be returned.

The only exception are the power cells for the workshop extractors. Those can't be returned at all. But with the orbital exchange you can order them as needed, so there are no unused cells.

I would agree with you if it weren't for the description on the wiki. (And it is mainly made up of people from OFF Discord)

The thing about the cap being slightly off? that's just color text. Doesn't mean it's open when shipped down.

mxc canisters could always be returned, whether used, half used or empty. I used to do it all the time.

either OP is experiencing a bug, or it has been changed.

honestly, I'm not too bothered to test it out now, as I don't use them anymore. just wanted to chime in that they could always be returned :)

Yea I just sent up my two last night and they vanished. I know there cheap to make but still annoying
There really is such a strange story. If the rules of the game have been changed, this can be reported.

The fuel cells for the workshop extractor were _always_ described as being unable to be returned to orbit. regardless of whether they were used or not. If you took too many with you, you were just stuck with them, and they got wasted.

I was never able to return them orbit. Before the orbital exchange even existed, you had to bring everything with you on the first landing. If I was doing spiritwalk exploration, the possible exotics yield is 600-1200. I always brought enough cells for the 1200, but sometimes if the RNG was super low on all three sites, I had unused cells. For giggles, I'd always put the completely unused cells in the droppod. Not a single one ever made it back.

I avoid having extras on the prospect by not bringing them with me in the drop pod at all. I use the orbital exchange if/when I find deposits, and pull down the extractors and fuel cells only if I find nodes. Saves me a lot of ren by not bringing them down in the initial pod. Good luck!

Yes, good advice now. But this was before the orbital exchange even existed in the game. Back then it was either bring what might be extra cells, or stare at an uncompleted node, and just walk away and leave it. I'm not sure which was worse. I'm not going to tech all the way to tier 3 to make biofuel extractors.

The orbital exchange makes all that so easy now. I build one of those as soon as I can, and then carry it around with for the rest of the mission.
