Some caves are covered by a wall you can mine through. So if the face of the cliff looks like it pointing to a spot more than likely you can mine through it. There is 1 cave per block on map some have none but most have 1.

yes, frequently. In some caves every time you leave and come back. In other caves, killing them once will make them not respawn (or entirely respawn) for a long time. Kill six worms the first time you ever enter, and then on revisits there will be only 1 or 2.

Shoot them with bows, or run up and knife them.

Not sure as I haven't played in some time, but I think you can still use the run in, kill one, run out back in for the worms to kind of cycle to the front so you end up only having to stand near the entrance to get most of them. This worked for me on Prometheus, however, some of the deeper ones still required some killin. Trial and error and watch out; their loogies are nasty.
