Note that for steel production you can also use charcoal which you can generate by burning sticks pretty fast.
what map are you playing on?
To OP, in the prometheus map there are a lot of coal nodes in the open. But since you don't need it anymore to make steel i think it's best use is as fuel instead of wood. Lasts way longer and doesn't produce charcoal.
they've made coal and charcoal interchangeable in recipes now
I know, for steel ingots. But when I chopped burned trees I got only charcoal.
I like to employ sets of rules during the game that make it interesting and challenging.
Using campfire charcoal feels..."cheesy"
I may use charcoal based steel bloom if they nerf the crafted result with it...
Nothing should replace coal as the main ingredient for steel bloom.
