This gives you close access to the pillars (swamp on west of side of map), arctic steppes (snowy area in southwest), and marsh to the east.
The marsh also leads to the volacanic areas too, which is where we're allllllll be going to spending a lot of time chasing red exotics eventually. I plan to build some way stations across the marsh directly to the volcanic regions.
This makes a long run to the snow area to the north, but that isn't a place I'll spend much time If I can avoid it, because of two words: Snow Stalker. If you haven seen one yet, I won't ruin the surprise. These things make the polar bears look like rabbits.
A close second would be in the pillars... it's not a bad place. No super apex predators that will insta kill you. But.... it's a swamp. The weather events are Putrid Gasses, Acid fog, Acid Rain. Not exactly the most pleasant or fragrant place to set up a permanent base.
Close to all biomes, good visibility (compared to the swamp), mild storms, often required resources nearby. Moas just run into your house more often than you can lose one.
Lava and Ice are just 3 map tiles away.
I went for L4 right next to the cave that connects to the lava area, the tunnel has 200+ ores and I wanted to build in the swamp
You can also go to the grassland via I4 tunnel

Yea I picked J7 I built on that lake next tot the river.
Curious are the drifters dangerous? I see them in the sky (completely freaked me out the first time) but they don't seem aggressive..
In my first encounter I got mauled. I took a shot at it from a distance thinking it was just some normal one-shot kill animal. I quickly noticed my stealth shot only tickled its nose. He then called in all of his buddies that just kept coming and they all feasted on my flesh.
Now that I know what I'm in for, I avoid them at all costs. lol
Also, friendly piece of advice that no one told me. Always carry a minimum of a wooden hammer with you to repair structures as you come across them. You'll thank me later.
