Water wheels are good but need occasional cleaning. Sometimes i use them just for running lights and a refrigerator. Their main advantage is that they don't require fuel which can become an issue playing for a long time on Open World.
Solar only works during daylight and there's no battery storage.
I build a generator house for mine close to my house. Don't know if generators can survive in the open.
I have also wondered if there is a power drop vs the longer the distance the generator is from the appliance?
Smaller would definitely be better. Considering i can store 450kg of coal in my hand-held mortar and pestle, a quarter-sized generator would seem acceptable.
Then the solar looks like it could fit on your backpack and we're supposed to believe that surface area is pulling in 5kw? Current tech on earth takes about a 2 car garage size area of panels to hit that number. Sure, you can get efficiency up with better tech but the amount of power an area of the planet receives is the ultimate limit. If the star is pumping that much power onto Icarus then the space suit is really so we don't get fried by solar radiation.
